Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen · New Movie Review by Sirdizzy
Two years have passed since Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) and the Autobots saved the human race from the invading Decepticons. Now he's preparing to leave home for college. Despite his extreme heroics, the battle of Mission City has become an urban legend believed only by conspiracy theorists.

The worst part of the film has to be how entirely cheesy the film went. The dialogue of almost all the Autobots is akin to the dialogue in Gigli (yes it’s that bad) another heavily panned film. It’s gut wrenching, atrociously incredibly cringe worthy. The three screenwriters attached to this project should be escorted to the Hollywood city limits and told to never return or face a firing squad. The twins had to have the worst dialogue in the film although even Otimus Prime wasn’t safe from horrible lines that made you want to throw popcorn at the screen.

The Hangover · New Movie Review by Sirdizzy
Two days before his wedding, Doug and his three friends drive to Las Vegas for a blow-out bachelor party they'll never forget. But, in fact, when the three groomsmen wake up the next morning, they can't remember a thing.

Every now and then there comes along a film that while not entirely unique is just original enough and gives a spin on an old storyline that you feel like you are seeing something new and untried. The Hangover is that kind of film, the buddy film where everyone gets drunk and all sorts of absurd things happen has been done before but the Hangover gives in enough of an original spin that it doesn’t feel like the same old retread and is genuinely hilarious. The film has a little bit of everything and even though they gave away some of the better moments in the trailers the films still has enough funny situations to keep you laughing throughout.

Land of the Lost · New Movie Review by Sirdizzy
Space-time vortexes suck. Dr. Rick Marshall is sucked into one and spat back through time. Way back. Now, Marshall has no weapons, few skills and questionable smarts to survive in an alternate universe full of marauding dinosaurs and fantastic creatures from beyond our world

Part of me wants to just rip into this movie for being one of the stupidest and most ridiculous movies ever made. The other part of me actually has to applaud the filmmakers for trying to turn what had to be one of the cheesiest and most ridiculous television shows ever made in a big screen movie. I appreciated the fact that they knew that they were trying to make a movie out of one of the worst television shows ever and they never seem to lose their sense of humor about it. Vast portions of the movie were tongue in cheek and just so over the top as an obvious homage to the original series...

Up · New Movie Review by Sirdizzy
Carl Fredricksen spent his entire life dreaming of exploring the globe and experiencing life to its fullest. But at age 78, life seems to have passed him by, until a twist of fate (and a persistent 8-year old Junior Wilderness Explorer named Russell) gives him a new lease on life.

What can be said about Pixar that probably hasn’t been said before. As a film studio and production house they have to be praised for the fact that they never make a mediocre movie and that the quality of their films are so great. Sure there have been hiccups along the way like Cars and a Bug’s Life but these films are only weak films when compared to the masterpieces that Pixar put together. Up has a little of everything for everyone. It has humor that will make you laugh, it has gorgeous visuals, it has a fun but deep storyline for both the kid and the cynical adult and is one of the best films that Pixar has churned out.

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian · New Movie Review by Sirdizzy
Former night guard Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) is drawn back to his old haunt, the Museum of Natural History, where he once had the magical night of a lifetime. There, he discovers that his favorite exhibits, indeed some of his truest friends, have been deemed out-of-date. Packed into crates, they await shipment to the vast archives of the Smithsonian. Their fate is unknown until Larry receives a distress call from the miniature cowboy Jedediah

The first Night at the Museum had such an original and fun storyline that it was the kind of film that you would almost want to see get a sequel. Hollywood is so littered with sequels and remakes that it was fun to see an original idea so you could almost forgive the film for trying to bank on the success of the first film.

Terminator: Salvation · New Movie Review by Sirdizzy
John Connor is the man fated to lead the human resistance against Skynet and its army of Terminators. But the future that Connor was raised to believe in is altered in part by the appearance of Marcus Wright, a stranger whose last memory is of being on death row. Connor must decide whether Marcus has been sent from the future, or rescued from the past. As Skynet prepares its final onslaught, Connor and Marcus both embark on an odyssey that takes them into the heart of Skynet's operations, where they uncover the terrible secret behind the possible annihilation of mankind.

Ahh the dilemma that is the Terminator saga. Simply put they probably should have stopped after the second one as each new installment of the franchise completely muddles the series and contradicts earlier movies.

Angels & Demons · New Movie Review by Sirdizzy
World-renowned Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is summoned to a Swiss research facility where he discovers evidence of the unimaginable -- the resurgence of a powerful ancient secret brotherhood known as the Illuminati, which threatens the very existence of its most despised enemy: the Catholic Church. He jets to Rome, where he joins forces with beautiful Italian scientist Vittoria Vetra in following a 400-year-old trail of ancient symbols that mark the Vatican's only hope for survival.

It’s strange how controversy and the possible banning of a movie can actually almost make it better. The Da Vinci Code is probably the strongest of the Dan Brown books but Angels & Demons is no slouch, Any time a a film stops and makes you think and react it actually stirs something inside of you that can make the film something you love or absolutely despise.

Star Trek · New Movie Review by Sirdizzy
The fate of the galaxy rests in the hands of bitter rivals. One, James Kirk, is a delinquent, thrill-seeking Iowa farm boy. The other, Spock, was raised in a logic-based society that rejects all emotion. As fiery instinct clashes with calm reason, their unlikely but powerful partnership is the only thing capable of leading their crew through unimaginable danger, boldly going where no one has gone before.

This is not your father’s Star Trek. The irony of that statement is that many fans of the series have been in an uproar over it but in all honesty it describes the movie better than any other line that you could think of to associate the movie with. The movie is light and day different between the first Star Trek motion picture and even more so from the television series...

X-Men Orgins: Wolverine · New Movie Review by Sirdizzy
"X-Men Origins: Wolverine" tells the story of Wolverine's epically violent and romantic past, his complex relationship with Victor Creed, and the ominous Weapon X program. Along the way, Wolverine encounters many mutants, both familiar and new, including surprise appearances by several legends of the X-Men universe.

I am a firm believer that sometimes its better to leave things shrouded in mystery and the unknown then to have to reveal every single aspect of a back story or a character’s origins. That being said the latest installment of the X-Men franchise now a standalone movie starring the ever popular Wolverine was actually a pretty good movie. The best part was likely the action as they seemed to try and up the ante on all three previous X-Men movies

17 Again · New Movie Review by Sirdizzy
What would you do if you got a second shot at life? Class of 1989, Mike O'Donnell is a star on his high school basketball court with a college scout in the stands and a bright future in his grasp.

Going into 17 Again I was expecting your typical body/age switch film that were so popular during the 1980’s and have recently made a comeback with films like 13 going on 30 and the remake of Freaky Friday. And for the most part that was the case but the film seemed to have a little more warmth and depth then other recent movies using the same model. Not only is Mike O'Donnell trying to fix his life that he has managed to get sidetracked he also trying to fix the lives of his children that also aren’t going as planned.

Crank: High Voltage · New Movie Review by Sirdizzy
Hitman Chev Chelios is kidnapped by a mysterious Chinese mobster. Three months later, he wakes up to discover his nearly indestructible heart has been surgically removed and replaced with a battery-operated ticker that requires regular jolts of electricity in order to work. After a dangerous escape from his captors, Chev is on the run again, this time from the charismatic Mexican gang boss El Huron and the Chinese Triads.

The first Crank straddled the line between outrageous yet almost plausible all the while leading you on a wild ride that was highly entertaining. Crank: High Voltage not only steps over the line of plausible but steps over so far that it seems to be mocking you as audience to shut your brain off so much that you somehow become brain dead to just accepts half of its plot.

Observe and Report · New Movie Review by Sirdizzy
At the Forest Ridge Mall, head of security Ronnie Barnhardt patrols his jurisdiction with an iron fist, combating skateboarders, shoplifters and the occasional unruly customer while dreaming of the day when he can swap his flashlight for a badge and a gun. Until Ronnie Barnhardt is called into action to stop a flasher from turning shopper's paradise into his personal peep show

I get the fact that the movie is being stupid for stupid’s sake but that doesn’t mean the movie is necessarily funny nor any good for that matter. Just because you set out to be stupid and moronic and you managed to pull these feats off masterfully doesn’t mean you made a good movie or a funny movie it just means you made a very stupid movie. A movie so moronic it is almost insulting at times like the screenwriters are laughing at you and thinking you are brain dead masses that will laugh at anything as long as they dumb it down enough.

Monsters Vs. Aliens · New Movie Review by Sirdizzy
When a meteorite from outer space hits a young girl and turns her into a giant monster, she is taken to a secret government compound where she meets a ragtag group of monsters also rounded up over the years.

I am at a loss with why lately every single kids movie needs to be in 3D. This tactic which was very popular in the 1950’s with horror films died down over the years only to be resurrected of late with every single kids and animated movie that has come out lately. The technology for 3D is essentially the same as was it was in the 1950’s and it looks about the same as well so you would think the gimmick would make as little sense now as it did then. Monsters Vs Aliens wasn’t a bad movie persay it was just your very average run of the mill kind of film.

When a crime brings them back to L.A., fugitive ex-con Dom Toretto reignites his feud with agent Brian O'Conner. But, as they are forced to confront a shared enemy, Dom and Brian must give in to an uncertain new trust if they hope to outmaneuver him.

The fact that the Fast and Furious franchise is now in their fourth installment isn’t that big of a surprise. The films are like car porn with lots of action and silly chase and driving sequences and sadly that does speak to a lot of audiences. What is more surprising is that the fourth installment is the best film they have made since the first film. Normally by this time and all you have to do is look at series’ like Saw, or Halloween or Police Academy etc etc… and the films have gone completely downhill

In 1958, as part of the dedication ceremony for a new elementary school, a group of students is asked to draw pictures to be stored in a time capsule. But one mysterious girl fills her sheet of paper with rows of apparently random numbers instead.

Sometimes you have to sit back and wonder what the producers or the writers were thinking when they make a film. Because Knowing had so much potential and the first half of the film is done so well that when the film train wrecks about halfway through and becomes a complete and absolute mess you are left dumbfounded on how they went wrong so quickly. And when I say they went wrong I am not exaggerating and cannot emphasize how bad and how horrible the film becomes.

CIA officer Claire Stenwick and MI6 agent Ray Koval have left the world of government intelligence to cash in on the highly profitable cold war raging between two rival multinational corporations. For their employers--industry titan Howard Tully and buccaneer CEO Dick Garsik--nothing is out of bounds.

Duplicity is one of those smart fast talking witty movies of yesteryear powered by super stars throwing verbal barbs at each other. Ala films like The Thin Man, Front Page and His Girl Friday the film take a page from the 1930’s and 1940’s when dialogue was key and when movie stars were bigger than life. You could easily see this film played out in that era with stars like Cary Grant or Katherine Hepburn and it was quite a refreshing break from all the special effects and action that Hollywood throws at you now days.

Race to Witch Mountain · New Movie Review by Sirdizzy
For years, stories have circulated about a secret place in the middle of the Nevada desert, known for unexplained phenomena and strange sightings. . It's called Witch Mountain, and when a Las Vegas cab driver (Dwayne Johnson) finds two teens with supernatural powers in his cab, he suddenly finds himself in the middle of an adventure he can't explain...

If you have seen the original Escape to Witch Mountain and were expecting something in the same vein you will probably be quite disappointed. The original Witch Mountain had that very 1970’s Disney feel to it when the times were more innocent and Disney was all about making very family oriented films. It is the kind of film that would be a very hard sell for today’s youth who are much more cynical and much more immerged in technology.

81st Academy Award Winners · New Movie news by Sirdizzy
I have been pretty happy with the last few years of best picture winners as my favorite movie of 2008 and 2007 both took home the statue. Slumdog Millionaire was the big winner of the night and rightfully so as it was the beat picture of 2008 and imbued joy and entertainment and one of the most creative and original movies of the year. So them grabbing best picture and director and a sleu of technical awards made me very happy.

The biggest surprise of the night might have been Sean Penn grabbing best actor and I have to admit I wasn't entirely rooting for him going in. But after hearing all the hatred spewed by the people on the streets and the closemindedness of thse hate mongers I am extremely happy the academy snubbed their noses at these destroyers of personal rights and showed that all men are created equal so yea for Penn and yea for open minded voters.

Taken · Movie Review by Sirdizzy
Former government operative Bryan Mills begins the longest 96-hours of his life and the hunt for the fearsome organization that has taken his daughter Kim. Mills had only recently given up his government career as what he calls a “preventer” to be near Kim, Bryan’s familial goal is nearly derailed when Kim requests his permission to spend time in Paris with a friend. All too aware of the dangers that could lie ahead for Kim in a foreign land, Bryan says no, but Kim’s disappointment leads him to very reluctantly relent. Bryan’s worst fears are realized when Kim and her friend Amanda are suddenly abducted in broad daylight from the Paris apartment at which they’ve just arrived.

Taken is actually a pretty fun movie. It doesn’t make you think, it doesn’t have a lot of drama (sure you are supposed to be moved a little by the fact that Liam Neeson’s daughter has been taken)...

Milk · Movie Review by Sirdizzy
The tragic story of activist/politician Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in America. In 1977, he was voted to the city supervisors’ board of San Francisco, and the following year, he and the city's mayor George Moscone were shot to death by another city supervisor, Dan White.

The best part about Milk is that it doesn’t try and convince you of anything. It doesn’t try and sway you to see one point or the other it tells its story unfolds its tale and lets you decide how you feel about it. That’s the best way for a film to tell its story when the story is very politically charged and even thirty years later it could try and force people to take sides. It leaves it up to you as the audience member to decide what is right and wrong and doesn’t try and force its opinions on you.

When he falls ill on his way home from school, 15 year-old Michael Berg is rescued by Hanna, a woman twice his age. The two begin an unexpected and passionate affair only for Hanna to suddenly and inexplicably disappear.

The Reader is like almost watching two movies that tie together nicely in the middle. The first part of the film is a sensual and sexually explicit journey of love, discovery and youth. Michael is young, he is innocent and the affair he and Hanna has changes his life forever even though he doesn’t yet realize it is going to have such a grand effect on him. The first half of the movie explores that innocence before it is lost, that idea of discovery even though you can feel a shadow looming in the distance that threatens to shatter everything.

Explores the origins of the centuries-old blood feud between the aristocratic vampires known as Death Dealers and their onetime slaves, the Lycans.

Going into the third installment of the Underworld franchise and having seen the other two I really wasn’t expecting a lot and I got exactly what I was expecting. The Underworld movies are pure fantasy and escapism films that aren’t trying to be much more than a good werewolf and vampire movie mixed in with lots of action, tons of special effects and the bare minimum of story. Frost/Nixon · Movie Review by Sirdizzy
For three years after being forced from office, Nixon remained silent. But in summer 1977, the steely, cunning former commander-in-chief agreed to sit for one all-inclusive interview to confront the questions of his time in office and the Watergate scandal that ended his presidency. Nixon surprised everyone in selecting Frost as his televised confessor, intending to easily outfox the breezy British showman and secure a place in the hearts and minds of Americans. Likewise, Frost's team harbored doubts about their boss' ability to hold his own.

I couldn’t help thinking when I left Frost/Nixon that I was probably one of the few people in the audience to not remember or know Nixon as a president nor the infamous Frost/Nixon interviews outside of a history book.

Best and Worst of 2008 · Movie Review by Sirdizzy
Overall I didn't think 2008 was that great for movies. Sure there were a couple really great movies like Slumdog Millionaire, the Curious Case of Benjamin Button and even the Dark Knight but overall the quality was way down from previous years. So making a top ten list was quite hard this year as I had to try and take from a lot of four star movies instead of five star movies to make the list.

The other problem with a the list this year is the fact that I haven't had a chance to see many of the movies up for awards this year as they just haven't made it to the theatres near me. I like to wait tell the middle of January hoping some of these movies will make it to me and the only one that did was Gran Torino and Doubt. Gran Torino made my top ten list but I really didn't like Doubt that much. But without any further ado my top ten of 2008

Gran Torino · Movie Review by Sirdizzy
Bigoted, gun-toting Korean War vet Walt Kowalski, retired and recently widowed, sets out to reform his neighbor, Thao, a young Hmong teenager who tried to steal his prized 1972 Gran Torino as part of a gang initiation. When Walt intervenes in a violent gang altercation involving Thao, he earns the respect of the Hmong community.

Gran Torino is all about Clint Eastwood, every part of the movie that was good and or great was because of him. From his acting, to his directing even to him singing the end credits the film is all about Eastwood he sells it and he makes it great. It’s a shame we don’t see him acting in very many movies nowdays because clearly with age he has gotten even better as an actor. And you can also see all the wisdom of his years in Hollywood in the part as he picked a role that was absolutely perfect for him.

Doubt · Movie Review by Sirdizzy
It's 1964, St. Nicholas in the Bronx. A vibrant, charismatic priest, Father Flynn, is trying to upend the school's strict customs, which have long been fiercely guarded by Sister Aloysius Beauvier, the iron-gloved Principal who believes in the power of fear and discipline.

The thing about Doubt is that it’s a character study kind of film. The movie is all about its characters and takes great effort to delve into all their personas. From Meryl Streep as Sister Aloysius Beauvier who doesn’t need any proof of wrong doing or a shred of evidence to go on a man hunt with such intense fortitude you can’t but help but be a little afraid of her. To Philip Seymour Hoffman who plays a kind but kind of off setting Priest who may just be too overly kind and too close to the boys he is in charge of.

Golden Globe Winners 2008 · New Movie news by Sirdizzy
I am fairly happy with the Globes this year, Slumdog Millionaire my favorite movie of the year (there is still a handful I still want to see like the winner for Best Comedy Vicky Christina Barcelona) won Best Drama. Also the show wasn't nearly as boring as it could have been and some of the speeches were quite good. Mickey Rourke's speech was great and Steven Spielberg's was very fascinating to see how he came to love cinema and make movies. Plus it was nice to see Kate Winslet finally win something.

As you may know the Globes are a precursor for the Oscars so once again my Oscar vs Golden Globes comparison...

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button · Movie Review by Sirdizzy
"I was born under unusual circumstances." And so begins "Benjamin Button," adapted from the classic 1920s story by F. Scott Fitzgerald about a man who is born in his 80s and ages backwards. A man, like any of us, unable to stop time. We follow his story set in New Orleans from the end of World War I in 1918, into the 21st century, following his journey that is as unusual as any man's life can be. "Benjamin Button" is a time traveler's tale of the people and places he bumps into along the way, the loves he loses and finds, the joys of life and the sadness of death, and what lasts beyond time

Who wouldn't be interested by the idea of instead of slowly getting older but instead always getting younger and at the end of our lives being at the peak of our phsyicality rather than in its downside. But that makes it a tale of mortality a tale that makes you think about your own mortality.

An illiterate kid looks to become a contestant on the Hindi version of Who Wants to be A Millionaire in order to re-establish contact with the girl he loves, who is an ardent fan of the show.

Many uplifting and heart warming movies have become so clichéd that it is hard to be a fan of them that much now days. You know how the movie is going to start and end even before you see them all that you don't know is the little pieces in between that will fill the movie until they come to a tiresome ending. That is why Slumdog Millionaire is so good because it refuses to follow the formula of so many of its predecessors instead going out on its own and telling a truly entertaining and wonderful story. The idea of the film is also very interesting, that all the elements in our life can lead up to us knowing all the answers to a game show.

Seven Pounds · New Movie Review by Sirdizzy
Ben Thomas, an IRS agent with a fateful secret, embarks on an extraordinary journey of redemption by forever changing the lives of seven strangers.

Seven Pounds is the kind of movie that you will either really hate or love. The movie really doesn't leave much middle ground and it is kind of dependent on the person watching the movie and their personality whether they will like the movie or not. If you have the kind of personality that likes to solve mysteries and try and figure things out and don't mind having a little patience for the movie to unfold its secrets you are probably going to love Seven Pounds. I found myself in that category as I really liked the movie and found it highly enjoyable. There is a reason the trailers are so cryptic and when going into the film you are not really sure what you are going to see.
