You Don't Mess with the Zohan · Movie Review by Sirdizzy
A top Israeli commando named Zohan (Adam Sandler) fakes his own death in order to pursue his dream: becoming a hairstylist in New York. Though he wants to put his life of counter-terrorism behind him, he quickly finds that it is not so easy to escape one's roots. As enemies old and new try to take him out, they will all come to learn the same thing: you don't mess with the Zohan.

I could come up with about a dozen puns on the title for this lackluster film like You Don't Mess with nearly two hours of time but I won't because the movie doesn't deserve that much effort nor time. And that pretty much sums up the movie as it really doesn't bother to put much time nor effort into actually being a really good movie instead coming up with an idea that could have been funny and hammering it into the ground.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull · Movie Review by Sirdizzy
It's now 1957 and Indiana Jones is thrust back into action, venturing into the jungles of South America in a race against Soviet agents to find the mystical Crystal Skull.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal skull is a hard movie to review because everything that was good and right about the movie could easily be countered with something that was wrong about it as well. The film is a lesson another movie it was seems like a long line of movies that just didn’t know when to say enough was enough. Dragging Indy out of the closet for one more go around and dusting off the moth balls on that famous fedora seems like a good idea until you sit down and realize a lot has happened and some of the magic has just disappeared over the years...

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian · Movie Review by Sirdizzy
One year later, the Kings and Queens of Narnia find themselves back in that faraway wondrous realm, only to discover that more than 1,300 years have passed in Narnian time. During their absence, the Golden Age of Narnia has become extinct and Narnia has been conquered by the Telmarines and is now under the control of the evil King Miraz, who rules the land without mercy. The four children will soon meet a curious new character: Narnia's rightful heir to the throne, the young Prince Caspian, who has been forced into hiding, as his uncle Miraz plots to kill him in order to place his own newborn son on the throne.

If you took everything that worked for the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and then took out a number of things that did not work for the film what you get is Prince Caspian.

Iron Man · Movie Review by Sirdizzy
Tony Stark is a billionaire industrialist and genius inventor who is kidnapped and forced to build a devastating weapon. Instead, using his intelligence and ingenuity, Tony builds a high-tech suit of armor and escapes captivity. When he uncovers a nefarious plot with global implications, he dons his powerful armor and vows to protect the world as Iron Man.

So where does Iron Man fall in this onslaught of comic based stories and characters? Iron Man would fall in the category of one of the better done and more exciting comic book movies to make its way to the big screen in the last decade or so. Up there with other greats like Spiderman 2 and Batman Begins the movie mixes plenty of action with a really good story...

Forgetting Sarah Marshall · Movie Review by Sirdizzy
After a devastating break-up with his girlfriend, TV sitcom star Sarah Marshall, a heartbroken and depressed Peter heads to Hawaii for a little vacation to try his best to forget every detail of his relationship. But love laughs at Peter, because Sarah is vacationing in the same exclusive resort as Peter, along with her new boyfriend.

I know I am not the only one who is quickly becoming tired of the whole Judd Apatow is a comedic genius trend. Sure his movies are funny, they are entertaining and they worth seeing but they are also starting to get a little stale as well. The stories change a little and we are introduced to new characters but the overall feel of his movies are the same, most of the jokes are the same and the characters are very eerily parallel to each other.

Smart People · Movie Review by Sirdizzy
Professor Wetherhold might be imperiously brilliant, monumentally self-possessed and an intellectual giant but when it comes to solving the conundrums of love and family, he's as downright flummoxed as the next guy. His collegiate son won't confide in him, his teenaged daughter is an acid-tongued overachiever who follows all too closely in dad's misery-loving footsteps, and his adopted, preposterously ne'er-do-well brother has perfected the art of freeloading. A widower who can't seem to find passion in anything anymore, not even the Victorian Literature in which he's an expert, it seems Lawrence is sleepwalking through a very stunted middle age.

When his brother shows up unexpectedly for an extended stay at just about the same time as he accidentally encounters his former student Janet, the circumstances cause him to stir from his deep, deep freeze...

The Forbidden Kingdom · Movie Review by Sirdizzy
While hunting down bootleg kung-fu DVDs in a Chinatown pawnshop, Jason makes an extraordinary discovery that sends him hurtling back in time to ancient China. There, Jason is charged with a monumental task: he must free the fabled warrior the Monkey King, who has been imprisoned by the evil Jade Warlord. Jason is joined in his quest by wise kung fu master Lu Yan and a band of misfit warriors including Silent Monk. But only by learning the true precepts of kung fu can Jason hope to succeed - and find a way to get back home.

I have felt that Jackie Chan might be getting too old for these kind of movies for the last few years, now I am beginning to think that maybe Jet Li is also getting to old for these type of movies as well.

Vantage Point · Movie Review by Sirdizzy
Eight strangers with eight different points of view try to unlock the one truth behind an assassination attempt on the president of the United States.

This is the kind of film that you are either going to really dig its style or that style is going to drive you mad and you are going to end up hating the movie. The film is called Vantage Point for a reason as it takes the vantage points of many different bystanders to one event and slowly unravels a story of what truly happened as no single person saw or understood everything that happened. So this can drive some movie goers to distraction as it takes a very long time for the plot to unfold... Now this isn't the first time this story telling technique has been used as Akira Kurisowa did in the early 1950's in his classic Rashomon but for many younger audiences this might be their first exposure to such a unique plot device

An epic tale of family, faith, power and oil set on the incendiary frontier of California's petroleum boom. Rambo · New Movie Review by Sirdizzy
John Rambo has retreated to northern Thailand, living a solitary and peaceful life in the mountains and jungles. A group of human rights missionaries search him out and ask him to guide them into Burma to deliver medical supplies. When the aid workers are captured by the Burmese army, Rambo decides to venture alone into the war zone to rescue them.

The message this time around is live for something or die for nothing. Rambo has given up on the world and we are supposed to believe that one more journey into hell and a war torn Burma is going to give him faith in humanity once more. Again like I said it's a thinly veiled plot to try and give closure to a character that has been abandoned by his government and his country all the while having an excuse to give Rambo one more go around.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street · New Movie Review by Sirdizzy
Story about a grisly revenge by Benjamin Barker (Johnny Depp), a man unjustly imprisoned by a lecherous judge (Alan Rickman). Barker returns as barber Sweeney Todd and exacts revenge.

Sweeney Todd is one of those films that you will either absolutely love or hate there is no real middle ground. For me personally I absolutely loved the film, as it was a dark and twisted tale of vengeance, revenge and the insanity of one man driven to the extreme. Some of the complaints I hear about the movie from people who disliked it is that it is to bloody and gory or they just couldn't get into it being a musical. That's where the love it or hate it relationship comes in the violence and the gore is very fitting to the character of Sweeney Todd who has almost become barren and no longer has a care for the world.

80th Academy Award Nominations · New Movie news by Sirdizzy
Honestly every time I see Atonement up for anything I kinda of seethe. The film is one of those very mediocre period pieces that gets tons more praise than it ever deserves and finds itself winning tons of awards. Have you gone back and watched any of the Best Pictures from the 1980's many of them are just like Atonement, overpraised and boring. The best films are so rarely nominated (yes my favorite film of the yeat made it but after that you have to go all the way to my honorable mentions with Juno to find another film).

My favorite film by far this year has been No Country for Old Men and it leads the nominees with eight which makes me very happy.

Cloverfield · New Movie Review by Sirdizzy
Five young New Yorkers throw their friend a going-away party the night that a monster the size of a skyscraper descends upon the city. Told from the point of view of their video camera, the film is a document of their attempt to survive the most surreal, horrifying event of their lives.

All the complaints that I had for Blair Witch are also true for Cloverfield. From the shaky hand held camera that after ninety minutes makes you want to throw up in your popcorn bucket to the fact that the movie has no real closure or shows any context to outside events. The entire story is told by the hand held camera, there are no outside influences, there are no answers to any of the questions that may plague you and in the end they don’t bother to tie up any of the loose ends...

Golden Globe Winners 2007 · New Movie news by Sirdizzy
To Say I am disappointed in the winners of the Globes would be an understatement. The fact that Atonement got Best Picture is a joke considering it should not have been nominated and the only reason it did was because of critics love for boring, beautiful scenic movie movies that just drone on for hours on end. Sweeney Todd is an awesome choice though as it was an amazing film and well worth the nomination. But the Coens should have won for director and the acting winners were all messed up too

As you may know the Globes are a precursor for the Oscars so once again my Oscar vs Golden Globes comparison...

Movie Theme of the Month · Top 10 Movies You Might have Missed during 2007 by Sirdizzy
Every year there are a number of films that fly under the radar, whether it be because of poor marketing, a limited release schedule or just plain bad luck these films are missed by many. They aren’t #1 films as far as box office numbers go but we know from experience that being a #1 film doesn’t make you a good movie (in 2007 Blades of Glory, Epic Movie, Evan Almighty, Norbit, and Wild Hogs all were #1 movies) but these little hidden gems are some of the best movies you may have missed. So for our Monthly theme we give you the top 10 movies that you missed in 2007.

I think No Country for Old Men has gotten enough press that we don’t need to include it on this list even though you should see it, so we will start the list with Into the Wild instead...

Luckily, Juno has the total support of her parents as she faces some tough decisions, flirts with adulthood and ultimately figures out where she belongs.

Not since Kevin Smith first graced us with his witty, sometimes crude and verbally sparring dialogue in Clerks has there been a movie where the most important part of the film is the dialogue. Take out most of the crudeness but leave all the incredible wittiness and the verbal tongue lashings and you get Juno. There is definitely more story to Juno then there was to Clerks, more plot and even more drama...

The Aliens (and a Predator) have landed on planet Earth, and small town America is about to become the scene of an epic interstellar showdown. From the murky sewers to the rain-soaked streets, Gunnison has become a total bloodbath. Nowhere is safe, especially from the unstoppable new hybrid known as the "Predalien."

Did somewhere along the line they forget what made both Alien and Predator so successful and such classics. When did they decide to take out everything that made those two series so iconic and good and just boil it down into a hohum kind of boring film. First with Aliens Vs Predator when for some inexplicable reason they decided to go with a PG-13 sequel to a series of six films all that had been rated R and felt dumbed down and neutered.

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story · New Movie Review by Sirdizzy
America loves larger-than-life musician and songwriter Dewey Cox! But behind the music is the up-and-down-and-up-again story of a musician whose songs would change a nation. On his rock 'n roll spiral, Cox sleeps with 411 women, marries three times, has 22 kids and 14 stepkids, stars in his own 70s TV show, collects friends ranging from Elvis to the Beatles to a chimp, and gets addicted to and then kicks every drug known to man... but despite it all, Cox grows into a national icon and eventually earns the love of a good woman longtime backup singer Darlene.

There might have been a time I was a fan of parodies and spoofs but that time is long gone. Parodies and spoofs are like the poor man's version of a movie. Not enough original idea's on their own to create their own movie all that is left to do is make fun of other films and genres and ussually poorly.

Charlie Wilson's War · New Movie Review by Sirdizzy
Based on the true story of how Charlie Wilson, an alcoholic womanizer and Texas congressman, persuaded the CIA to train and arm resistance fighters in Afghanistan to fend off the Soviet Union. With the help of rogue CIA agent, Gust Avrakotos, the two men supplied money, training and a team of military experts that turned the ill-equipped Afghan freedom-fighters into a force that brought the Red Army to a stalemate and set the stage for conflicts in the Middle East that still rage to this day.

I wonder if the producers of the film got the irony of the last line of the film, because the film itself falls perfectly into that category. I'll paraphrase, we did something glorious but in the end we &*$%ed up the end game. The same could be said about Charlie Wilson's war for the most part the film is brilliant, funny and entertaining but they screw up the end game and the ending...

He is surrounded by "the Infected"--victims of the plague who have mutated into carnivorous beings who can only exist in the dark and who will devour or infect anyone or anything in their path...

I am Legend is one of those rare films that mixes scenes and genres. It is almost like two films in one, a drama and an action film with a little horror thrown in merged by day and night. During the daytime the film it is more drama, with some harrowing scenes of loneliness.

Golden Globe Nominations 2007 · New Movie news by Sirdizzy
Well It's that time of year again when Hollywood starts to praise itself and its movies. The Golden Globe nominations though include at least four or five movies though that have not even been released yet like Sweeney Todd and Dewey Cox. While also including a number of films not yet in wide release. films that most likely not be in wide release until almost last January. So it makes it hard to judge a lot of the nominations.

My favorite film by far this year has been No Country for Old Men and it leads a much thicker cast of dramas for best picture this year with seven nominees instead of the normal five. As you now the Globes are a precursor for the Oscars so once again my Oscar vs Golden Globes comparison...

Movie Theme of the Month · Happy Holidays Month by Sirdizzy

The first being the comical and crazy aspects of a season when we run around like chickens with our heads cut off to find the perfect gift, max out our credit cards and just act loony to begin with. The second type of film is the uplifting film where we remember what the holidays are supposed to be.

Whether it be about family or about just helping out your neighbor or even a stranger these our the kind of films that give you that warm and tingly feeling. And the last type of film is the film that is not really about the holidays but rather just happens to take place during the holidays. So for this months feature we will break the list into three parts so you can laugh, cry and go yippee kiyai.

Enchanted · New Movie Review by Sirdizzy
The tale follows the beautiful princess Giselle as she is banished by an evil queen from her magical, musical animated land and finds herself in the gritty reality of the streets of modern-day Manhattan. Shocked by this strange new environment that doesn't operate on a "happily ever after" basis, Giselle is now adrift in a chaotic world badly in need of enchantment. But when Giselle begins to fall in love with a charmingly flawed divorce lawyer who has come to her aid even though she is already promised to a perfect fairy tale prince back home she has to wonder: can a storybook view of romance survive in the real world?

I went into Enchanted with that weary guy kind of approach to the film and was actually surprised as the movie was quite fun and enjoyable. I understand that I am clearly not the target audience as this movie is meant for children and females but it is funny and charming...

The first thing that obviously come across and the first thing you notice is of course that they use motion capture animation to bring the film to you. Unlike our horror compilation that we were able to do chronologically Sci-fi films are a little trickier because as technology has improved so have the films themselves. Which makes sense that films based on the future and technology should be reliant on technology to bring them alive. That's not to say early sci-fi films aren't worth seeing but you have to take them with a grain of salt as many of them can be considered very cheesy.

American Gangster · New Movie Review by Sirdizzy

He eventually made his way to Harlem where he became a heroin kingpin by traveling to Asia's Golden Triangle to make connections, shipping heroin back to the US in the coffins of soldiers killed in Vietnam...

The main comment you’re likely to hear when discussing American Gangster is it is good but not great. Because while the movie does capture you attention and rivet you for over two hours it does not capture your imagination like many of the great Mafia films of the past. While Frank Lucas is a memorable character that does capture your attention he does not capture your imagination...

Along the way, Christopher encounters a series of characters that shape his life.

There is a sense of freedom, courage and a little bit of insanity into what Christopher McCandless did by trying to throw off the bonds of society and explore and see the world as it once was, to be one with nature, truly alone with oneself. There is also a brotherhood and comradeship that most people will never feel or understand before he made his great journey north to be completely alone. The mysterious and charismatic Russian-born Nikolai is a driver for one of London's most notorious organized crime families of Eastern European origin. The family itself is part of the Vory V Zakone criminal brotherhood. I think every moviegoer and film lover has a type of movie or genre that they especially like. Sometimes as we get older that genre may change and we may find ourselves liking another genre and not caring for the one we had previously loved. I don’t know if I was always a fan of the gangster/mafia genre but this is a particular type of film that I do really love.

We Own the Night · New Movie Review by Sirdizzy
Bobby Green has turned his back on the family business. The popular manager of El Caribe, the legendary Russian-owned nightclub in Brooklyn's Brighton Beach, he has changed his last name and concealed his connection to a long line of distinguished New York cops. For Bobby, every night is a party, as he greets friends and customers or dances with his beautiful Puerto Rican girlfriend, Amada, in a haze of cigarette smoke and disco music. But it's 1988, and New York City's drug trade is escalating.

While probably not completely unique the idea of two brothers who find themselves in completely different worlds that are about to collide adds for some terrific drama. Joaquin Phoenix is living the fast and easy life, while not a drug dealer or a criminal he associates with them every day and even partakes a little himself.
