Six months have passed since the rage virus has annihilated the British Isles. The U.S. Army declares that the war against infection has been won, and that the reconstruction of the country can begin. As the first wave of refugees return, a family is reunited--but one of them unwittingly carries a terrible secret. The virus is not yet dead, and this time--showing no outward symptoms--it is more dangerous than ever.
I really enjoyed 28 Days Later; it had a good mixture of story, characters and just a feeling of eerie mysticism wrapped in a zombie movie. So I was actually pretty excited about 28 Weeks Later because there was a lot of questions that were left unanswered from the first film and there was quite a lot left that could be done with the story. That's why I was vastly disappointed by 28 Weeks Later because not only does it not answer any of the questions that had gone unanswered but also it does nothing to progress the story or expound on any characters from the first film. It was like they looked at the success of the first film and say, hey we could make some more money throw out a cheap sequel and that's just what the movie is a cheap sequel.
I can understand that Cillian Murphy did not want to come back for a sequel but what's their excuse for not expanding the story from the first film. The movie is like taking the cheapest and least interesting parts from the first one and doing a ninety movie of people running from zombies. Gone is most of the story, gone is the mystique of trying to figure out where the zombies came from and why they are attacking in such a crazed manner, gone is the interesting characters, gone is any kind of finale to the movie. I mean I can see all the elements of the sequel in the first film or by watching Dawn of the Dead, people running from Zombies which is all 28 Weeks Later is a ninety minute race of ridiculous action as Zombies chase the character we could care less about.
If I were to give you a one-word review of the film it would be noisy. That's what the movie is its a noisy sequel where they turn up the soundtrack to ear drum breaking heights in an effort to get you to forget there is no story and that you have already seen this movie. The worst part is the took away all the mysticism of the first film, that quite eerie feeling as you try to figure out what is happening that is abruptly interrupted by the frenzied chase of terror from zombies on the loose. What they did is replace it was noise, there is no calm before the storm there is no quite to break up the monotony of noise of the film, there are no quite interludes all there is noise.
It's always a bad idea to expect child actors to carry your film and by not really developing any characters all that is left is the two kids trying to carry a film with no help from any of the rest of the cast. I mean gone is Cillian Murphy’s haunted gaze, replaced by a despondent father, a female doctor who is almost a cameo character, an army sniper in a movie that doesn’t its best to try to make American’s look like gun wielding thugs and two whiney trouble making kids who basically bring about the virus and destruction of London once more. None of them really grab you nor make you care for them in the least bit. The movie is a vast letdown and the sad thing is the final scene hints at a third film, lets just hope its better than the second film.
