When government agents murder her family, Aeon Flux (Charlize Theron) swears revenge. On the front lines of a war against the perfect society, Aeon is one of the few to suspect that this perfect life is hiding a perfect lie. The top operative in an underground rebellion against the dictatorial leaders of Bregna -- a walled future city -- Aeon receives the mission she's been waiting for her entire life from The Handler (Frances McDormand), the leader of the rebellion: the assassination of Trevor Goodchild, ruler of Bregna.
Based on the MTV animated series.

I could probably sit here and dissect this movie and rip it to shreds like many other critics have been doing but I’m not going to simply because when it all boils down the movie while flawed was fairly enjoyable. Oh, the movie has a lot of things wrong with it that’s for sure but it also has a lot of good things going for it as well. The movie didn’t feel complete, I didn’t feel like I knew the characters that well and that’s because the movie is trying to obviously condense a much larger story into that of a 90 minute motion picture. The series I am sure is vastly better because of its ability to delve much deeper into the world of Bregna which was fascinating and too much story for such a short movie so unlike Serenity recently which faced the same task Aeon Flux fails to get the character development out of the way and get into the main plot of the movie fast enough and it can leave some people with a sour taste in their mouth. The movie also really has no identity of its own, too many of its elements are borrowed from movies that did it better and did it with more grace. The movie doesn’t stand out like such movies like the Matrix did. But the movie is action packed, it is fun, and what I did get to see of the story of an obviously much larger picture was fascinating and enthralling. Go for the action, go for the science fiction just leave your brain at the door.

The choice of Charlize Theron is obvious they wanted a gorgeous leading lady who does have some acting ability and its harder to find a hot actress much better than Theron. She is captivating but she is handcuffed by the character they never fully develop. I could see some of the animation techniques from the series in the way she dressed and how they handled the character even though I have never seen the show. While Theron manages to hold her own none of the other cast really puts in their best performances. Sophie Okonedo never really does more than fill in and give someone for Theron to relate too and Frances McDormand was wooden at best. The movie is an ok afternoon matinee with lots of action, a hot woman and a story that will make you want to see the MTV series and that was enough for me.

There is a lot of political overlay on how the city of Brenga is run as the government officials believe they know what is best for their citizens and that their citizens are on a need to know basis. Sometimes I fell our government is the same way, if you get into conspiracy theory I am sure that is exactly how you feel. How much do we know about the inner workings of the CIA, the FBI and any other government agency that has taken on the power of deciding what we should know, when we should know it and never letting us decide for ourselves what the best course of action we would like seen taken. Sure the movie is an extremist look at what government can become but how close are we too that extreme, if we knew the answer I am sure it would be closer than we would have ever dreamed.
