Charles Weyland is a billionaire industrialist who is dying and before he goes he wants to leave his mark on the world. When one of his satellites over Antarctica discovers what looks to be an ancient pyramid, thousands of years old and 2000 feet under the ice he thinks he has discovered his chance at leaving his legacy. So he gathers an international team of archaeologists, scientists and security experts, led by environmentalist and adventurer Alexa Woods, to investigate the mysterious pyramid. What they witness 2000 feet below the frozen surface at first excites, and then terrifies them. They discover a pyramid bearing a mixture of Aztec, Egyptian and Cambodian cultures. Inside the pyramid they find a matrix of chambers so technologically advanced that it becomes obvious that an extraterrestrial influence has been at work there for thousands of years. The chamber walls reconfigure unexpectedly, trapping members of the team and cutting them off from their colleagues. Moving from chamber to chamber, the horrific truth finally reveals itself: Predators have been keeping alive a captive Alien Queen who lays eggs at 100 year intervals. Young Predators warriors are sent to earth and tested by fighting the Alien offspring. The team finds they have stumbled into the middle of an incredible rite of passage -- and a war between Aliens and Predators, now the only question is who is going to win and whether or not they can get out alive themselves before they become victim of either side.
I thought for sure I wasn’t going to like this movie, as the two stories don’t really work that well together, but I was wrong. The movie was surprisingly good all the while not being that special. I mean the movie is just sheer “popcorn” fun, while playing out the what if story if these two iconic creatures were to meet up and do battle. The movie is sadly missing the suspense of the first two aliens movies as well as the first predator movie, which is half the reason they were so great. Heck, in the first Aliens movie we don’t actually see the Alien tell almost the very end of the movie. Much like last years Freddy Vs Jason the movies are more about having fun and pitting two great cinematic characters together with enhanced CGI and some great fight scenes. But the part I liked the most was the interaction of the Predators and the humans, as the Predators are the lesser of the evils and the humans find themselves having to rely on them to stay alive “The enemy of my enemy is my friend.” Like I said there is nothing really that special about this movie, sure it has some great fight scenes and some nice looking CGI but the originals of both series’ are much better than this movie could have ever hoped to be. But for fans of these classic alien characters this movie will not disappoint them, as overall the movie is worth a viewing even if its just a matinee.
