The Aliens (and a Predator) have landed on planet Earth, and small town America is about to become the scene of an epic interstellar showdown. As these two breeds of cosmic killers clash in the small-town streets Gunnison, Colorado, the locals are sent running for their lives. From the murky sewers to the rain-soaked streets, Gunnison has become a total bloodbath. Nowhere is safe, especially from the unstoppable new hybrid known as the "Predalien." Now, as the once-quiet community of Gunnison is overrun by Aliens, the only hope for mankind is a fierce hunter from the deepest reaches of space. But this Predator is far from a benevolent savior of the human race, because he'll kill any man, woman, or child who gets in the way of his mission to destroy every last Alien under these stormy Colorado skies.
Did somewhere along the line they forget what made both Alien and Predator so successful and such classics. When did they decide to take out everything that made those two series so iconic and good and just boil it down into a hohum kind of boring film. First with Aliens Vs Predator when for some inexplicable reason they decided to go with a PG-13 sequel to a series of six films all that had been rated R and felt dumbed down and neutered. And then to the sequel in Requiem where they did return the R rating and the violence the series needed only to forget to keep some story, maybe even a little suspense and instead just replace everything that was so good about the originals with mindless action and one explosion after another. The movie is worse than a popcorn film because it aspires to be nothing else, it thinks it has found it’s niche but in reality it’s forgotten why people might want to see it to begin with. It makes the film boring, it makes it a letdown and it makes you sad you spent money to see it.
In both the original Alien and Predator it is quite a ways into the film before we seen the creatures and this leads up to a lot of suspense. You know something is going to happen, you know something is happening bur your just not sure what and you are glued to your seat to find out where it is going. Even the first Alien Vs Predator left some of that suspense in the film they discovered the Antarctica Temple and it’s a little while before you see either the Aliens or the Predators. They took a little time to set up a story and gave us a little bit of plot before letting the two baddies go head to head. Not so with Requiem, there is no plot, all the characters are just fodder to the story and there is no real story. So what was two classic series, that had good characters, plots and a whole lot of suspense has been stripped down just to there action scenes and thrown at you in random.
If you watch Aliens, the film does have a lot more action that the first Alien movie and less suspense but even they don’t delve straight into the fight. They take a little time to continue the story of Ridley, set up a plot and then they jump into the action. It’s not like the series didn’t have a model to take after but the film is another of those lazy sequels that is just banking on a name and not really trying to be anything other than forgettable.
To try and dissect the actors performances would be a joke because there wasn’t a single actor that stood out in this film. They were supposed to be playing high school teenagers that was so unbelievable that I actually came home and tried to research how old they were because it was like another case of Beverly Hills 90210 with thirty year olds trying to play teenagers. You don’t even really get to know any of the characters anyways before they are killed in one silly scene after another so I guess it really doesn’t make that much of a difference anyways. The film was bad from beginning to end and completely lost what made the Alien and Predator franchises any good.
