Conrad is a troublemaker that always does the opposite of what he is told to do. He has a knack for making a mess and ruining things. Sally his sister is the complete opposite, she is a control freak that plans out every single moment of her day and never does anything spontaneous. She is thought of as the perfect little angel. That’s why their Mom’s new boyfriend Quinn wants to send Conrad off too military school and marry their mother while keeping Sally around. In fact Quinn would do anything to get Conrad out of the picture. That’s why on their Mom’s most important day, a day when she is supposed to host potential clients at her home everything must be perfect. The house must remain spotless and Conrad must find away to behave or he risks the option of being sent off to military school. Now on most days this might be very hard for Conrad to accomplish but on this day an unexpected visitor is going to make it virtually impossible. That visitor is the Cat in the Hat, a six-foot tall feline that also seems to have a knack for causing trouble and creating the biggest messes imaginable. So as the day spirals into chaos due to the cat’s appearances and despite the warnings of the now talkative fish, Sally must find away to help restore order while having a little fun and Conrad must find away to tone down his tendencies for chaos’ and making messes.
The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss was first published in 1957, and remains one of the top ten best-selling hardcover children's books of all time. Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat, is one of the most beloved literary classics and I fear Dr. Seuss is rolling in his grave as we speak. Watching the trailers I could not put my finger on what seemed to be wrong with this movie, but after seeing it was very clear what was wrong with it. And that is Mike Myers, he absolutely butchers this movie with such ease that I am amazed that someone did not scream at him to tone in down during filming. I am curious if Myers was really trying to sound like the Cowardly Lion from the Wizard of Oz or it was some freak accident that just went horribly wrong. Imagine sitting through the Wizard of Oz where the Cowardly Lion is the main character and you have to endure 90 minutes of his speech impediment, then throw in some very unfunny and stupid moments from Myers and you about have the essence of this movie. It’s a hideous travesty what they have done to a literary classic much less making us endure through this movie. The movie throws in some odd adult humor at the strangest times too making me wonder who they were marketing the movie for. Sure I laughed occasionally as did the rest of the audience but more often than not I was cringing and thinking Why oh Why? A Saturday Night Live skit gone bad in the incarnation of a 90 minute movie.
