The ultimate struggle for power pits men against kings and kings against gods. But the war between the gods themselves could destroy the world. Born of a god but raised as a man, Perseus is helpless to save his family from Hades, vengeful god of the underworld. With nothing left to lose, Perseus volunteers to lead a dangerous mission to defeat Hades before he can seize power from Zeus and unleash hell on earth. Leading a daring band of warriors, Perseus sets off on a perilous journey deep into forbidden worlds. Battling unholy demons and fearsome beasts, he will only survive if he can accept his power as a god, defy his fate and create his own destiny.
I am not a big fan of remakes and reboots but occasionally a movie almost seems perfect for a modern adaptation and Clash of the Titans is one of those kinds of movies. The 1981 film is a movie of its era and time and almost entirely too cheesy with special effects that were even dated back then. So a modern remake of the film seems like a perfect idea with the movie getting to benefit from today’s technology and effects. But despite the fact that the film seemed perfect for a remake the modern adaptation left a lot to be desired and failed to me more than just another big FX ridden popcorn flick. Clash of the Titans is fun, whimsical and enjoyable but that is all there is to the film as it just seems like another big summer blockbuster that is trying oh so hard to make you go wow and not really trying to be that great of a film.
Clash of the Titans almost seems to be using its story to make it possible for them to jump from one special effects riddled scene to some new and fantastical creature in the next scene. The story and plot almost seems to be an excuse for the effects and the creatures and not really there to progress the film or to care about the characters of the film. So the film has a strange feel to it, it has a story and is not all about the effects but at the same time it is as if the only reason there is a story is so we can have more FX shots. The movie feels crammed and cluttered and almost a mess as everything from Medusa to Pegasus is introduced in the film.
Clash of the Titans could be fun in that popcorn kind of way, light and fluffy and so easily forgotten. It is the kind of film you will likely enjoy the first time you see it and then forget about it the moment you have left the theatre. It’s the kind of film that is trying so hard to impress you and fails to do so. It also seems fitting that they jumped on the 3D bandwagon even though the film was not shot in or for 3D. The whole converting the film to 3d just seems like another futitle effort to try and wow you and take advantage of a technology that is the fad right now.
Sam Worthington is getting a reputation for being the go to green screen kind of actor. With his second film in the last six months pretty much shot in front of a green screen they fail to realize it takes a special kind of actor to not look wooden in front of the green screen. Sadly Worthington is not that kind of actor as he does seem quite wooden throughout the film. Even great actors like Liam Neeson fail to pull off their roles and the film is just your typical popcorn special effects laden stew of a film.
