Jake is what they call a confidence man, someone who gains your trust and confidence as the con you out of all your money. Him and his crew have been working the streets of L.A. and have just pulled off a big scam. He has everything you need to make a con work from dirty cops on the payroll, to partners in crime that make the cons work. But this time he may have picked the wrong mark as the man was an accountant for a crime boss The King and the money Jake and his crew scammed him out of was the King’s and he does not take lightly to be swindled. So now Jake and his crew face two options, the first being to run and the second to trying to make amends with the King. Jake decides it is better to make amends and he proposes a business venture with the King where the King picks their next mark and they recoup his money. But the problem is the King chooses a mark that nobody would dare normally hit, that of a successful business tycoon who was the son of a mob boss. To confound their problems the King has insisted that they take a member of his along with them to pull off the crime. As well to the fact that Jake has included a hot young lady he finds himself infatuated with but knows nothing about that could bring him and his crew down. So now Jake must juggle all the elements that could go wrong while trying to pull off a most daring con that could leave him dead or in prison.
This movie makes me wonder why it didn’t market itself more. I had never even heard of it, or seen any trailer on it before it saw it, which is an utter shame because most people will miss out by not seeing it. I was utterly enthralled with the movie as it drew me in completely. I have to admit I have a love for crime and con men type movies and I love when a con man type movie is done so well like this one that I instantly want to see it again to catch all the little tidbits and clues I missed the first time. Sometimes it’s an ending that makes a movie as they have fooled you and it’s that last little surprise that makes the movie so great, that’s no exception with this movie. The characters are a little shallow and superficial at times but they still make you care enough to want to see what is going to happen to them and also make you glamorize the world of crime. The movie is smart, it is edgy, and it is a thrill ride of clues and hints that maybe some astute viewer might put together before the end but in most cases leads to a shocking and amazing ending that totally makes the movie a must see. When you have a hit on your hands like this movie is, it’s a wonder the studio did not try and get itself known so more people could enjoy it. If you want a good thriller and a good drama that is very well made and entertaining this is one of the best movies of the year and you will not be disappointed.
