Two longtime NYPD partners on the trail of a stolen, rare, mint-condition baseball card find themselves up against a merciless, memorabilia-obsessed gangster. Jimmy is the veteran detective whose missing collectible is his only hope to pay for his daughter's upcoming wedding, and Paul is his "partner-against-crime" whose preoccupation with his wife's alleged infidelity makes it hard for him to keep his eye on the ball.
Absurd, silly, ridiculous and actually quite funny. Cop Out is the kind of film that knows how to laugh at itself, laugh at all the previous buddy cop films that have come before it, laugh at an entire genre and just be utterly silly all at the same time. If you go into the film taking it even remotely serious you are going to be seriously disappointed as the film is one tongue in cheek joke after another in an endless onslaught of hilarity and ridiculousness. Sure the movie does go to far at time and trends on that very thin line of funny spoof and unfunny spoof but for the most part the film is a entertaining ride that is just there to make you laugh and entertain you.
When I read that Kevin Smith was only directing the film and not writing it for the first time in his career I was not sure what to think. Kevin Smith has always been known better as a writer and one who is great with dialogue and not known for his camera and directorial work. But the movie still has a very Smith style too it from the writing to the dialogue. If you didn’t know Smith hadn’t wrote it you might not even notice the small subtle differences of the writers from Kevin’s style. There is still some great dialogue in the film, There is still some funny an entertaining characters all Kevin Smith staples it is just missing that over the top go a little further Smith style is all.
Cop Out actually even goes to the effort of putting together a plot and a storyline which is why it is better than most modern day spoof movies. There is a story to follow, there are characters and they have backgrounds and are not just rehashes from other movies and they do a great buddy cop film that is meant to be funny which most buddy cop movies aren’t. And the movie has great characters and side characters like Seann Williams Scott’s thief and Guillermo Diaz as the baseball loving bad guy.
Bruce Willis has played a cop so much in his storied career that it is kind of fun to see him let loose a little and have so much fun with this character. This isn’t your typical Bruce Willis bad ass cop you have seen so many times before it is a more fun loving tongue in cheek kind of cop. I am not sure what to think of Tracy Morgan as he almost seems like a cartoon character in the film like Daffy Duck in person but he did make me laugh despite how ridiculous he was. Cop Out is a fun and entertaining movie worth seeing that will likely get panned by the critics.
