For centuries mankind has consumed the natural resources of the planet and at a surprising rate nonetheless. And for the centuries, things have gotten steadily worse as the greenhouse effect and global warming have continued to rise at such levels that eventually something catastrophic is bound to happen. And that time has finally come when Mother Nature will strike back to even the balance of things. Mother Nature is about to unleash a worldwide terror of disaster, including multiple hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, tidal waves, floods and the beginning of the next Ice Age. At the center of the story is a paleoclimatologist (a scientist who studies the ways weather patterns changed in the past), Professor Adrian Hall, who tries to save the world from the effects of global warming but his warning of the impending catastrophe are ignored from almost everyone. All the while he also trying to get to his son, Sam, who was in New York City as part of a scholastic competition, when the city was overwhelmed by the chilling beginnings of the new Ice Age. In addition to all of the other challenges Dr. Hall faces, he's also going against the flow as humanity they race south to warmer climes, and he's nearly the only one going north. But it may be too late for him and his son as Mother Nature deals one blow after another striking back at all of humanity for the wrongs they have committed and the balance they upset.

Special effects do not make a movie. Special effects are suppose to enhance the movie and make it better. Too many Hollywood producers and directors forget this. Then again as far as this movie goes there really was nothing they could have done to enhance the story as it your simple Armageddon, end of the world kind of movie. That being said I actually found it fairly enjoyable and worth watching despite the fact it really was missing a plot and most of the situations were contrite and about just a few characters. Maybe it’s the story that interested me so much, because of all the end of the world scenarios we see in the movies, this one seems quite probable. It is like the natural of order of things, we have upset the balance of nature and it is finally striking back to set things straight. The movie also managed to mix just enough humor in to make you laugh on occasion, as you could see the irony in many of the events. This is the kind of summer movie Hollywood normally pushes, big budget, full of special effects, fairly weak story but just enough of drama and fun to keep you entertained. I don’t know if the scientific community has torn this movie apart yet, but I am sure in the coming weeks they will manage to find a hundred things wrong with it before all is said and done. And that is sad because movies like this aren’t meant to be analyzed and picked apart but rather just enjoyed for what they are and that is mindless entertainment.
