The daughter of respected actor and matinee idol Lawrence Harvey, and model-turned-socialite Sophie Wynn, Domino Harvey (Keira Knightley) was born into a life of wealth and privilege -- a lifestyle that did not interest her. Even from her earliest years, Domino rebelled against convention and the jet set. At the tender age of eight, her beloved father passed away and her mother looked to the stability of boarding school in a misguided attempt to tame her wild child. But nothing could repress Domino's fiery nature -- not friendships, not school, not her mother's high society. Even the extraordinary excesses paraded before her during a brief stint at modeling paled in comparison to her own escapades. Not until she stumbled upon a job seminar recruiting aspiring bounty hunters was her thirst for excitement at long last quenched. To Sophie's (Jaqueline Bisset) horror, Domino not only fell in love with the job but also with her fellow adventurers, who over the years would become her family.
It’s a shame to see the potential of a movie destroyed by the director’s pure lack of respect for his audience’s intelligence or by the fact that the director simply just doesn’t know how to present that particular movie. I am not sure which it is but Tony Scott’s heavy-handed approach at the movie’s direction almost destroys it. Maybe he doesn’t think his audiences will have the attention span to follow along with a good drama or maybe he just doesn’t care and presents his movie with this almost mangled and cut to pieces storyline. Honestly the movie almost feels like a music video for greater portions of the film as the quick cuts become more and more annoying as they become more and more overused. I have found the reason why last year after seeing Man on Fire a movie I liked but for some reason couldn’t love and was left wondering why as I couldn’t place my finger on what I disliked about the movie and that reason is Tony Scott. Again I liked Domino but I will never love it as the movie is so heavy handed and cut so poorly like it was meant for a fourteen-year old teenager with an attention span disorder.
I like Keira Knightley and she almost seems perfect for the role of Domino Harvey as I had little knowledge of Domino coming in and she fits what little I did know. She has that arrogant rich girl gone bad attitude that was Domino and she almost saves the movie from Tony Scott. But with her having to constantly repeat herself and not being allowed to stretch her acting ability or the character for that matter she in the end almost seems a little hollow and that again can be blamed on the director. Mickey Rourke also turns in a good performance and his character almost seems richer than Domino’s as he is not forced to do the stupid music video lines and cuts that Keira Knightley couldn’t get away from. After seeing the movie you too will probably like it but wonder what you didn’t like about it and it won’t be much of a surprise for you to learn that Tony Scott started his career making commercial as the movie at times seems like one long advertisement about a career in the fascinating world of bounty hunting.
