Peter Highman is an expectant first-time father whose wife's due date is a mere five days away. As Peter hurries to catch a flight home from Atlanta to be at her side for the birth, his best intentions go completely awry when a chance encounter with aspiring actor Ethan Tremblay forces Peter to hitch a ride with Ethan--on what turns out to be a cross-country road trip that will ultimately destroy several cars, numerous friendships and Peter's last nerve.

Due date is exactly what you would expect it to be and that isn’t entirely a bad thing. The trailer or any TV spot you might have seen gives you a fairly good idea what to expect as Due Date is your typical odd couple kind of comedy. You have the buttoned down straight man and the other crazier wackier and somewhat delusional man paired up for a road trip where you know anything can and will happen. That doesn’t make the movie less funny it just makes it a little strained at the edges at times as it tries to find its niche in a very tried and worn out genre. The movie will make you laugh but not as much as you would expect or want to.

I like the pairing of Downey Jr. and Galifianakis as they really do have that odd couple effect from everything from their personalities to their appearances. Robert is your Hollywood pretty boy and Zach is your oddball Hollywood outcast and this pairing works for much of the movie. I was a little disappointed though that they gave Zach’s character a very A typical Hollywood cliché of a simpleton for the movie though. Someone so delusional he barely seems to have a grasp on reality, the problem with these type of characters is they always feel so forced and so clichéd. I would have rather have seen Zach play it more Daffy Duck like shrewd, a little crazy but still entirely in touch with his whereabouts.

As expected the film mostly deals with the crazy hijinks that Zach’s character brings down on Robert’s character. From breaking out of a Mexican holding cell to be kicked off a plane some of these hijinks are funnier than others but the movie keeps throwing them at you in an unrelenting stream. Which can be fun at times and tiring at other times. The movie though for the most part is funny and worth seeing.

I like Robert Downey’s choice to take a foray into comedy after his comeback success in the action packed Iron Man. He is charming, witty and is very good at the straight man role of this comedic duo. Zach on the other hand isn’t really stretching much instead just resting on his laurels of previous comedic success and his character is very similar to his Hangover character which is a shame as I would like to see more out of him. Due Date is a clichéd comedy that still deliver’s enough laughs to make it worth the price of admission.
