In the spirit of "Scary Movie" and "Date Movie, a parody that spoofs recent mega-blockbusters. The comedy centers itself around four orphans who visit a chocolate factory and are transported to the wonderful land of Gnarnia, after stumbling upon an enchanted wardrobe. There they battle pirates, encounter earnest wizards and attempt to defeat Gnarnia's dastardly White Bitch.
Ah, the spoof movie, the lowest form of film and cinema, the scum on the bottom of the barrel we call Hollywood. When all new ideas and stories are exhausted and all that is left to do is pick fun at movies already made and stories and ideas already on film. I am not saying there aren’t any good spoof films, in fact after watching the film I sat for a moment and thought of a few good ones and tried to figure out why they were good and Epic Movie was so bad, oh so very bad. The first that came to mind was Shaun of the Dead, a spoof movie that poked fun at the whole zombie genre. But then I got thinking about Shaun and I realized even though it was a spoof movie, it had it’s own story, its own plot and that is what made it so good. Epic movie doesn’t have its own story nor it’s own plot, it takes the plot of movies like Chronicles of Narnia and follows their plot while spoofing other popular modern movies. It makes for a lame joke, it makes for a very unfunny movies as well.
It’s not like Epic Movie is making fun of bad movies or bad genre cliché’s like Hot Shots did, its making fun of good movies like Harry Potter, X-Men and The Chronicles of Narnia. It’s like it taking some of the best movies of the last 5 years and just pissing on them and expecting you to laugh at them making fun of good movies. I don’t know if the irony was lost to the filmmakers during all this that they are making a horrendously bad movie by making fun of good movies. The movie has no plot of its own, it basically takes four different storylines from four different films and throws them into Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Chronicles of Narnia all the while mixing in stories from movies like X-Men then submissing them just as randomly as they introduced them. There is no straight plot line to be followed the movie is like a random hodge podge of bad jokes and idiotic ideas thrown together and passed off as a movie.
Poor Kal Penn, it appears he will never escape his American Pie stereotype of the token Asian guy or his trip to Whitecastle. It’s like he’s happy to be dumbed down and fit into a nice neat little box of what the typical average idiot movie goer thinks of him. He’s unable to escape the Stiffler’s mom references even in this movie and it’s truly sad. Have you seen Scary Movie or any of its sequels then you may have seen Jayma May’s role before it’s usually played by Anna Faris in the Scary Movies and it’s the same exact character in Epic Movie. They weren’t kidding when they said from 2 of the 6 writers of Scary Movie because they obviously were too lazy to write a few new characters in and instead rehashed its ideas from their previous movie. Faune Chambers is your black token female character if not as outspoken as the Scary Movies ones, its still all just a rehash of good movies made into a bad one. I think I chuckles once or twice, I don’t remember ever laughing though in a movie that is supposed to be a comedy.
