Two days before his wedding, Doug and his three friends drive to Las Vegas for a blow-out bachelor party they'll never forget. But, in fact, when the three groomsmen wake up the next morning, they can't remember a thing. For some reason, they find a tiger in the bathroom and a six-month-old baby in the closet of their suite at Caesars Palace. The one thing they can't find is Doug. With no clue as to what transpired and little time to spare, the trio must retrace their hazy steps and all their bad decisions in order to figure out where things went wrong and hopefully get Doug back to L.A. in time to walk down the aisle.
Every now and then there comes along a film that while not entirely unique is just original enough and gives a spin on an old storyline that you feel like you are seeing something new and untried. The Hangover is that kind of film, the buddy film where everyone gets drunk and all sorts of absurd things happen has been done before but the Hangover gives in enough of an original spin that it doesn’t feel like the same old retread and is genuinely hilarious. The film has a little bit of everything and even though they gave away some of the better moments in the trailers the films still has enough funny situations to keep you laughing throughout.
Sometimes with films like the Hangover I wish they would only use deleted scenes in the trailers because it’s always sad when some of the best moments of the movie are already spoiled. Comedies suffer from this the most because a joke heard the second time is never as funny as it was the first time you heard it. But despite this flaw the film was one of the funnier films of the last few years. It had all the elements that make a great comedy and it doesn’t go over the top or even have to result to adolescent and childlike humor most of the time. There are a few moments of childish humor but they are refreshingly few and far between. The movie is instead full of more adult humor that one can enjoy for those who have gotten drunk and can’t remember the night before.
The best part of the film might just be that the mystery of it all as they try and unravel what happened the night before. You are not slapped in the face with all these moments they instead come out slowly through the progression of the film. It makes for a vastly superior film and gives it an element of intrigue and mystery. Each hilarious moment of unraveling the night before leads to another funny moment as they find out more and more about the insanity they plunged themselves into. It makes for a perfect pacing of story and comedy and makes the movie far superior than most recent comedies.
The cast of characters were a little clichéd but the movie was funny enough that you can forgive them for being a little predictable at times. From the drunken partying idiot in Bradley Cooper, to the nerdy pushover in Ed Helms and to the moronic Neanderthal in Zach Galifianakis the cast is your usual motley group that usually only exists in the movies. But with the exception of Zach Galifianakis who they did have as the brother of the bride most of these character might actually hang out together and it is that plausibility that eventually sells the movie. The film is hilarious, it is funny and it is worth seeing several times even if the jokes won’t be as funny the second time around.
