For Nick, Kurt and Dale, the only thing that would make the daily grind more tolerable would be to grind their intolerable bosses into dust. Quitting is not an option, so, with the benefit of a few-too-many drinks and some dubious advice from a hustling ex-con, the three friends devise a convoluted and seemingly foolproof plan to rid themselves of their respective employers...permanently. There's only one problem: even the best laid plans are only as foolproof as the brains behind them.
I am sure everyone has had a boss at one time or other that they have hated or is just so horrible that they have made your working life miserable and that is the beauty of the film Horrible Bosses we can all relate. Sure most of us would never think to murder are bosses to make our lives better but then again maybe none of our bosses are as horrible as the trio of bosses that make the films character’s lives so miserable. The film is comedy at the extreme that is almost relatable. It is taking the most extreme situations and adding the most extreme way to deal the problems that makes it so funny. So why we can relate the fact that makes it so funny is we would mostly likely never do what the character propose to do. So the hilarity ensues and we can’t help but laugh at the absurdity of it all and that is what makes Horrible Bosses so much fun.
I do wish they had taken it even a step further as while the movie is funny it could have been even more so had they just gone a little further. It is a hard R comedy so there is no excuse to not make it as hilarious and outrageous as possible. I think what might have held them back was a lot of the actors they cast were big name actors and while Colin Farrell didn’t seem to mind making fun of himself Jennifer Aniston on the other hand didn’t have that same self depreciating value the film could have used. But in the end the film is still hilarious as all hell breaks loose once the trio of friends decide to do away with their bosses.
What the film may have needed in all honesty is a little more sex. By casting Aniston in a the role they just couldn’t capture that element of the film. They have plenty of violence, and action but they just don’t have that much sex. I mean the film is about depravity and excess and absurdity it just feels like it is missing that one element to tie all that together. It hints at it and it does show it a little but that is the one element is just seems to fall flat. Horrible Bosses is funny and entertaining but just seems to have small holes leaving it incomplete.
The cast is a little hit or miss as far as their choices went. While Kevin Spacey is amazing as an evil controlling monster, Jeniffer Aniston really doesn’t pull of her sexpot role that well. Colin Farrell also does a great job at the cokehead son who only cares about getting high and getting laid. You have two sets of characters here the workers and the bosses and they each have their own comedy and actually do very well as ensemble cast. The film is great if you just want to unwind and enjoy some comedy and laugh and is one of the better comedies of the year.
