Dom Cobb is a skilled thief, the absolute best in the dangerous art of extraction, stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state when the mind is at its most vulnerable. Cobb's rare ability has made him a coveted player in this treacherous new world of corporate espionage, but it has also made him an international fugitive and cost him everything he has ever loved. Now Cobb is being offered a chance at redemption. One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossible -- inception. Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of specialists have to pull off the reverse: their task is not to steal an idea but to plant one. If they succeed, it could be the perfect crime. But no amount of careful planning or expertise can prepare the team for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move. An enemy that only Cobb could have seen coming.
Inception is a perfect example of a movie that mixes special effects and a deep and rich plot in a landscape littered with movies that only seem to care about effects. Inception is a thinking man’s movie one that even when it’s over you can’t seem to shut off your brain as it has you ask and answer so many questions in its two and half hour running time that it almost causes overload. You are never really sure what is real and what is not and not since movies like the Matrix or Memento has this been done so beautifully and entertainingly.
It’s no surprise that the director for Inception is Christopher Nolan who also made Memento as he brings his mind bending techniques to the forefront once more. And that is what Inception is a complete and total mind frak that just leaves you glued to your seat as you have no idea what is going to happen next nor are you entirely sure what just happened. The ending like the rest of the movie leaves as many questions as it answers and leaves it up to you as the audience to decide what is real and what is not.
The special effects of the movie just enhance and add to the movie instead of forcing the movie to rely on them. The effects make the movie not only a thinking man’s movie but also an action packed adventure with plenty of explosions and fight sequences to satisfy and action genre fan. The movie is also helped by the fact that it has to have no restraints in reality or physics for that matter as the majority of the movie takes place in a dream. From fight seems that take place on top of the ceiling and walls to a van causing ripples through the dream world the movie has a little of everything. This leaves the film boundless opportunities that Nolan uses to perfection.
I have said it before and will say it again Leonardo DiCaprio is one of my favorite actors and one of the best actors in Hollywood right now. He really sells every character he plays and makes you believe that he is that character down to their smallest faults. But Inception is not a one man show as there are tons of great performances from the entire cast whether it be Ellen Page or Cillian Murphy. Inception is the kind of film you will want to see numerous times as it has a little of everything a great story, great action and effects and a plot that never seems to unravel.
