The lives of the MI agents for the English government are fraught with peril to protect god and country. It is these brave men and women who do their work in the shadows that protect the freedoms of all those who do not even know they exist. So when the countries top agent is killed trying to uncover a plot that could jeopardize the countries very safety all resources will be used to make sure he did not die in vain. But when all the other agents are killed attending his funereal service that leaves only one option and one agent left alive. That agent is Johnny English a bumbling accident-prone buffoon who up until now had been more of a secretary for the real agents rather than an agent himself. But with his country and his queen in need of his service Johnny takes the case and his first assignment is to protect the crown jewels which are on display and seem to be the center of a plot to not only steal them but to use them for some sinister end. But when Johnny bumbles up the assignment and the jewels are stolen he will find himself on a trail that could change the lives of every English citizen forever and its up to him to save the day if he can save himself from is own bumbling ways first.
Several years ago I might have found this a lot funnier than I did viewing it now. I blame that on the fact that I am simply and truly tired of potty humor movies and movies that seem strictly geared to entertain a more immature audience. To be kind to the movie I would say it was amusing at times and never really got past that slight chuckle stage to become hilarious or at the very least quite funny. The movie could not even contain itself from including a scene that involved human waste, which too me is a pure lack of imagination and the desire to do something new, rather than to beat this old tired horse to death. Then there was the fact that it was a spoof on the James Bond movies using an inept bumbling buffoon to play the part of an English secret agent. I don’t mind spoofs if they are done well and there have been quite a few that are downright hilarious this movie is not one. Again the movie is only slightly well done when it comes to being a spoof showing that obviously the producers were happy to slap together something rather than really trying to be creative. I also have to question the use of Rowan Atkinson who can be funny in side roles like Rat Race but who is too over the top to pull off a movie he is the lead in. The movie might have been more had it truly wanted to but at best it acquired the occasional chuckle and leaves the audiences just happy to see it end.
