When Chris, a likable, high-school loser, finally gathers the courage to reveal his love to Jamie -- the girl of his dreams and a super cool cheerleader -- she rejects him, saying she just wants to be friends. So, he moves across the country and transforms himself into a selfish, womanizing and successful music executive. But, 10 years later, circumstances bring him back to his hometown and fate reconnects him with the "just friends" girl of his dreams. Suddenly, Chris has the chance to undo the past, but unbelievably, he finds it more difficult to romance Jamie than it was 10 years ago. Can one escape the clutches of the "friend zone?" Is it possible to go from "just friend" to boyfriend? Chris is about to find out the hard way.
There was a point in the movie where everything seemed to be wrapped up and resolved and yet the movie did not end it instead went on for another half hour and that explains the entire movie in a nutshell. The movie was funny, the movie was witty but it never seemed to realize when it went to far and when it should call it quits and just wrap it up. I am sure that extra thirty minutes is because they reached that point and realized that they had only a 60 minutes movie and they needed just a little bit more so they added the extra storyline but they could have just as easily fleshed out the first sixty minutes of the movie which would have made a far better movie. Don’t get me wrong I laughed and I giggled like the next idiot sitting next to me but I just get the feeling that the rewatchability of this movie will be very little and that the jokes simply won’t be as funny the second time around. Then of course there is the pop reference as Anna Faris is clearly making fun of Paris Hilton and I am not sure ten years down the road if anyone will remember whom Paris was. So the movie was funny but it just didn’t know when to quit and in the end lost a little of its charm.
I love Ryan Reynolds as an actor, he is truly one of those charismatic performers than can steal the screen but he will take almost anything they throw at him. So you see him bouncing from the funny sidekick, to the sociopathic madman and back to a loveable but kind of screwed up guy. Funny thing is the part of Chris almost seemed liked a Ben Affleck character and while I think Reynolds did a better job than Affleck ever would have maybe he should have left the movie Ben to do. Amy Smart is cute and she is loveable but she cannot carry a movie by herself as that’s about all she is. Fun to look at, the girl next door kind of girl but not that much of an actress. It is Reynolds who carries the film with the help of Anna Faris who does a knockout job of making fun of Paris Hilton. Funny and worth a matinee but not the kind of movie you will buy and watch again and again.
