When David (Mark Ruffalo) sublet his quaint San Francisco apartment, the last thing he expected was a roommate. He had only begun to make a complete mess of the place when a pretty young woman named Elizabeth (Reese Witherspoon) suddenly shows up, adamantly insisting the apartment is hers. David assumes there's been a giant misunderstanding...until Elizabeth disappears as mysteriously as she appeared. Changing the locks does nothing to deter Elizabeth, who begins to appear and disappear at will. Convinced that she is a ghost, David tries to help Elizabeth cross over to the "other side." But while Elizabeth has discovered she can walk through walls, she is convinced that she is still alive and isn't crossing over anywhere. As Elizabeth and David search for the truth about who Elizabeth is and how she came to be in her present state, their relationship deepens into love. Unfortunately, they have very little time before their prospects for a future together permanently fade away.
The movie works, which is quite surprising as it, is about as formulaic as you can get. Its like you have seen the movie a dozen times but they do just a good enough job on it this time that you still enjoy the movie. It follows every cliché you could think of, it does every plot twist you see 10 minutes before they think of it but despite all this the movie is warm, it is funny, it is charming, it is cute and it is entertaining. Yes, the movie is most likely quite forgettable if you are not of the female persuasion as I don’t ever see myself watching this movie again more than once or twice at best. But that’s fine and the movie doesn’t mind that I am not going to re-watch it, the movie wasn’t for my genre or my gender the movie is quite aptly put a “Chick flick.” Would I recommend the movie for someone, the answer is simply yes. The movie has a good story, it has charming actors who have good chemistry together, it is cute and you will find yourself laughing from time to time.
I am not the biggest fan of Reese Witherspoon, she is too much the bubblegum generation of female characters, light and fluffy and that’s about it. But she works in this role, although I don’t think anyone bought her as a doctor as she is not the doctor type that is for sure. She does a good job as Elizabeth as while she doesn’t blow you away with Oscar talent acting she is believable as someone who wants to love and be loved and she has great chemistry with Mark Ruffalo. Mark Ruffalo is another actor who is going to blow you away with his acting skills but who is genuinely interesting and likeable on screen. Again I didn’t ever buy his love sick, down beaten try at the character because he never really tried to sell it but for the most part I could see him and Reese as a couple and in love. If anyone nearly ruined the movie for me it was Jon Heder ala of Napoleon Dynamite fame. The only reason he is in this movie is because of that fame as they try and cash in on what I found to be one of the most annoying characters ever on film. They didn’t try and play it straight and give Heder a chance to maybe see if he can act instead its like they ripped him right out of Napoleon Dynamite and every time he was on the screen it was like grinding my teeth annoying. But besides that major annoyance the movie was fun and entertaining.
