Set amid the chaos of pre-revolutionary China, small-time thief Sing aspires to be one of the sophisticated and ruthless Axe Gang whose underworld activities overshadow the city. Stumbling across a crowded apartment complex aptly known as "Pig Sty Alley," Sing attempts to extort money from one of the ordinary locals, but the neighbors are not what they appear. Sing's comical attempts at intimidation inadvertantly attract the Axe Gang into the fray, setting off a chain of events that brings the two disparate worlds face-to-face. As the inhabitants of Pig Sty fight for their lives, the ensuing clash of kung fu titans unearths some legendary martial arts Masters. Sing, despite his futile attempts, lacks the soul of a killer, and must face his own mortality in order to discover the true nature of the kung fu master.

Honestly If you went into this movie expecting a serious action martial arts film ala House of Flying Daggers you would probably walk away quite disappointed. Now if on the other hand if you walked in expecting a crazy martial arts parody ala Kung Pow Enter the Fist you will walk away most pleased and with a side hurting from laughter. You have to know what to expect and this movie left no doubt in their trailers that it was a fun light hearted, wacky, zany kind of movie that will just keep you smiling with all the silliness. Most of the movie I was smiling and entertained if not laughing uproariously. While I found the movie funnier and more entertaining than Kung Pow I personally enjoyed Shaolin Soccer more, which is not to take way anything from Kung Fu Hustle which itself was very funny and entertaining.

It’s always hard to judge acting in a foreign film with subtitles because you can never totally gage what they are saying with their body language but Stephen Chow had me laughing hard at times with the little things he was doing. This is one of the those movies that you can probably watch a dozen times and catch little humorous tidbits every time you see it. Leung Siu Lung who plays the beast is the one who cracked me up the hardest though as he just had this kind of attitude that he was so good that he didn’t even have to try. Dressed in a dirty tank top and a pair of flip flops he is not what you expect a Kung Fu master to be but the fight scenes with him and Stephen Chow were the highlight of the movie. If you like silly, funny movies Kung Fu Hustle is the movie for you.
