Space-time vortexes suck. Has been scientist Dr. Rick Marshall, is sucked into one and spat back through time. Way back. Now, Marshall has no weapons, few skills and questionable smarts to survive in an alternate universe full of marauding dinosaurs and fantastic creatures from beyond our world. Sucked alongside him for the adventure are crack-smart research assistant Holly and a redneck survivalist named Will. Chased by T. rex and stalked by painfully slow reptiles known as Sleestaks, Marshall, Will and Holly must rely on their only ally -- a primate called Chaka to navigate out of the hybrid dimension. Escape from this routine expedition gone awry and they're heroes. Get stuck, and they'll be permanent refugees in the Land of the Lost.

Part of me wants to just rip into this movie for being one of the stupidest and most ridiculous movies ever made. The other part of me actually has to applaud the filmmakers for trying to turn what had to be one of the cheesiest and most ridiculous television shows ever made in a big screen movie. I appreciated the fact that they knew that they were trying to make a movie out of one of the worst television shows ever and they never seem to lose their sense of humor about it. Vast portions of the movie were tongue in cheek and just so over the top as an obvious homage to the original series that you couldn’t help but applaud them for their efforts but then there was the fact that the movie was sheer stupidity bottle in film form. It was a battle between enjoying the obvious cheesy homage and wincing at the sheet stupidity of the movie. What could have been a horrendously bad movie only ended up being a very mediocre one instead.

You have to wonder sometimes what producers are thinking and if there really is such a lack of good original ideas that they greenlight films like Land of the Lost. In no known universe was this movie ever going to be great. Heck even if you had given them all the modern advancements of technology and effects and they got to release it during the 1970’s the best that could have been hoped for was just a good movie. So you question why I even try to make a film out of a very bad and cheesy 70’s television show. For some reason they think remakes and sequels are the only thing that will sell when I guarantee that ninety percent of the audience that saw this movie have never ever seen an episode of the television show so why bother resurrecting it.

The movie did have a few funny moments though as it did make me laugh on a few occasions when I wasn’t grimacing at the sheer stupidity of the movie. The problem is that almost all the humor was geared for an adolescent crowd that is going to find Will Ferrell dousing himself in dinosaur urine hilarious. There were few moments of true comedic greatness and instead lots of moments that will get a small titter and laugh but nothing that is really that funny. And these moments are too far and too few in between.

I am officially tired of Will Ferrell and wish he would stay away from movies forever. He had a glimpse that he could do something more with Stranger than Fiction but instead of following up good performances like that with other good choices he instead only makes movies were he plays an idiot and his very own clichéd characters. Some actors for some reason rarely try to step out of their comfort zones and Will Ferrell is one of those actors. Danny McBride doesn’t add much to the film either as he seems to be competing with Will on who can be the stupidest actor in the film as he also plays a very clichéd redneck idiot of a character. They might have had a chance at a good movie instead of a mediocre one if they had just done a little better casting instead of just going for a big name like Ferrell. The movie had its moments and was tongue in cheek but the moments weren’t enough to make it more than just maybe rental fodder.
