Texas Ranger Roland Sharp (Tommy Lee Jones) is a gruff take no prisoners kind of guy that always gets the job done now matter what, but he is about to face his most challenging task yet, living with an protecting a group of cheerleaders. He is assigned to protect them, as they are the only witnesses to the murder of a key figure in the prosecution of a drug kingpin. Sharp must now go undercover as an assistant cheerleading coach and move in with the young women, pretending to be their Assistant Cheer Coach. The girls will bring his own life into prospective as they are absolutely the exact opposite of everything that he has ever known or has ever been and they will give him insight on everything from fashion to his relationship with his estranged daughter, that or get him killed trying to protect them.
At best the movie could be called slightly amusing, but for the most part the movie was drab with an occasional laugh mixed in. Man of the House has an ok premise but it’s a premise and story that has been done before and done better. Throw someone in a situation that is completely against their nature, the tough and gruff Tommy Lee Jones with a group of cheerleaders who have nothing in common and watch them change each other’s minds on their opposites. Been there, done that to be a little cliché myself. The movie has its funny moments where the situations can make you laugh but its lost in a slew of moments that are neither funny nor entertaining and border on boredom.
The one question I really asked is why the heck was Cedric the Entertainer in the movie, I can only guess so they could say hey we got Cedric its got to be funny. Every scene with Cedric could have been cut as in no way were they needed nor did they progress the movie at all. I might have accepted them but they were also the least funny of the moments of the movie as well, as Cedric tried to dance his way through the movie. I always like Tommy Lee Jones, he really is a good actor and he can play that rough, gruff character so very well so it’s really not his fault the movie fails so miserably. He did what he needed to do, it was the writing and plot that were so very weak not his performance. I doubt there was much they could have done to improve this movie, its just been overplayed and they did nothing to stand out, easily forgotten material thrown out in a weak month of movies hoping somebody, anybody will see it.
