Some events shape our lives for the duration that we live them. When they were kids growing up together in a rough section of Boston, Jimmy Markum, Dave Boyle and Sean Devine spent their days playing stickball on the street, the way most boys did in their blue-collar neighborhood of East Buckingham until once such event changed that forever. Nothing much out of the ordinary ever happened, until that event altered them forever when Twenty-five years later, the three find themselves thrust back together by another tragic event--the murder of Jimmy's 19-year-old daughter. Now a cop, Sean is assigned to the case and he and his partner are charged with unraveling the seemingly senseless crime. In the wake of the sudden and terrible loss of his child, Jimmy's mind becomes consumed with revenge and his own plans to find the killer. Jimmy was always the troublemaker of the group when they were kids and he even lived a short stint as a criminal. Caught up in the maelstrom is Dave, now a lost and broken man fighting to keep his demons at bay, the one he has been hiding from since they were children. As the investigation creeps closer to home, his wife Celeste becomes consumed by suspicion and fear, while Jimmy's wife, Annabeth, draws her family tighter together in order to weather the storm that appears to be heading their way to alter their lives once more in unexpected ways.
This is the type of slow thriller that takes a very long time to bubble up and boil over. The movie is movie in a direction that you know is going to be unexpected and setting up for something that should be amazing and it takes its time getting there. This is the old classic type thrillers and dramas that rely heavily on the acting and the story to carry the movie with little or no effects and action. That does not mean the movie isn’t wonderful which it is, it just seems to me like most people can’t sit down now days and enjoy a movie that takes time to build up and let you get to know the characters before hitting you with the real suspense of the movie. These types of movies are a refreshing change of pace from the typical Hollywood popcorn flicks that are constantly released. I also have to say I really like Kevin Bacon as an actor he has such skill it’s a shame that he usually mires himself with bad parts and bad movies. He does an excellent job in the movie as Sean who almost seems obsessed to solve the case for Jimmy but also to bring some closure into his own life. The movie has a great ending that some people may not like but is very fitting for the movie. The movie is your kind of movie if you enjoy really good dramas that take great care at developing their characters before throwing them into the melee.
