Captain Jack Sparrow has kept a secret from everyone and now that secret is about to come back and haunt him. Captain Jack owes a blood debt to the legendary Davey Jones, Captain of the ghostly Flying Dutchman and king of the ocean. With time running out, Jack must find a way out of his debt or else be doomed to eternal damnation and servitude in the afterlife as a crewmember of the Flying Dutchman. Making matters worse, Sparrow's problems manage to interfere with the wedding plans of a certain Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, who are forced to join Jack on yet another one of his misadventures.
If you could say one thing about Pirates of the Caribbean it would be that it is the perfect summer movie. It has all the elements that Hollywood and most moviegoers want and love in their summer blockbusters. The movie is an action packed thrill ride, with sword fights, explosions, and amazing looking computer effects mixed in with a fair amount of comedy and several memorable characters, what more could you ask out of a summer movie. Pirates of the Caribbean and its sequel are fun to watch, and an easy sell in today’s world. Who as a kid didn’t imagine themselves sailing the seven seas, fighting pirates and rescuing the girl or having other fantastic adventures when our imaginations were vivid and wild. That’s what Pirates of the Caribbean captures, it captures that fantasy of adventure and excitement that we all dreamed of having when we were kids. It captures our imagination of mystical creatures, dread pirates, sword fights and doing the unthinkable.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest is not just a movie it is an adventure, it is like being a child again when the world seemed so big and so many things seemed possible. That’s why people love these movies, that’s why it will do fantastically at the box office, people want to feel young again, they want to feel the wind and the sea in their face and Pirates of the Caribbean gives them all that for the cheap price of an admission.
Dead Man’s Chest is one of those rare sequels that actually may be better than the first. We are all ready in love with the characters and the story and now we get to see them in further adventures filled with more excitement and more harrowing escapes. We also get new and incredibly well down and down right scary characters in the likes of Davey Jones and his ghost crew of the Flying Dutchman. I fell in love with the lore of Davey Jones in the movie, its like hearing about ancient Greek gods who rules the sea, plus the character looked awesome. This is what you want from sequels, same great story, same great characters mixed in with some new and more fantastic elements and characters and Dead Man’s Chest delivers on all accounts.
Pirates of the Caribbean was great because of one actor and that is and was Johnny Deep and the same goes for the sequel. It’s Captain Jack Sparrow that makes the movie so memorable, he’s the character you remember and love and he’s the reason the movies work. I have warmed up to Orlando Bloom a little bit, he still can’t act but his character is essential to Dead Man’s Chest and he does do an ok job even if his character is one we will never truly remember. Keira Knightley is the actor that rounds out the cast though as she brings that missing element to the movie that the quirky Depp cannot bring. She makes the cast more of an ensemble and I liked her much more in the sequel that the first movie. But to me the character that stood out in this movie to go along with Captain Jack was Davey Jones. Although mostly CGI Bill Nighy still brings a sense of foreboding every time he speaks and he gives you that fantastic character to replace the skeletons of the first movie. The movie sets up nicely for Pirates of the Caribbean 3 due out to next summer and I am sure everyone will be chomping at the bit to see that one as well.
