Johnny Utah, is a former Rose Bowl star with a bum knee, who after his injury joined the FBI and has been assigned to Los Angeles into the bank robbery division. A series of bank robberies is frustrating the bureau. Four robbers who call themselves the Ex-Presidents, and wear rubber masks of Nixon, Carter, Reagan and LBJ, have pulled off a string of bank jobs and left not a single clue behind. Johnny Utah is given a partner named Pappas, who thinks the robbers may be surfers, because one has a tan line, and a strand of hair found at the crime was polluted with the same contaminants found at a popular surfing beach. So he convinces Utah to go undercover as a surfer and try to break the case. There he enters a new world of its own as the surfers are almost tribal and to truly be accepted into such a world he must become a surfer himself and not just a pretend one. He then enlists a beautiful young surfer named Tyler to try and help him to learn to surf and finds himself amongst a tribe of surfers led by Bodhi who believes that surfing is more than just a sport it is a source of enlightenment. Now Johnny is finding himself put under the spell of Bodhi who as introduced him to a new world full of adrenaline and action. But when Johnny begins to suspect that Bodhi may behind the bank robberies his world is about to unravel and he is about to be faced with decisions of love and honor.
Point Break is a movie that is so action packed that you may forget at times you are watching a movie and instead feel the wind and surf of California where the movie takes place. The story while simple is one that still enthralls you as you are taken in by the action, the adventure, the crime, and the fun that is this movie. Many people may say Keanu Reeves is not that great of an actor but he still has put together many great movies. While he may not be able to pull of the dramas that many associate with great actors he is still one of the best action film stars out there. Neither with the cold brutality that is Arnold nor the slur that is Sylvester but with is own swagger and style that makes you believe in him as an action packed adventure ride and wild character. This also may be one of the few good movies that Patrick Swayze has ever made as he plays the part of half guru, half madman that is his part. If Swayze could find more roles like this his career might have taken off, instead of being mired in movies and parts he cannot pull off. The movie is an adventure ride that will want you craving for more. This is a typical popcorn film that makes no apologies for being such and I am sure that you as an audience will not care to as you are taken along for the ride.
