Royce, a mercenary, reluctantly leads a group of elite warriors who come to realize they've been brought together on an alien planet... as prey. With the notable exception of a disgraced physician, they are all cold-blooded killers -- mercenaries, Yakuza, convicts, death squad members -- human "predators" that are now being systemically hunted and eliminated by a new breed of alien Predators.
Predators is another of those franchises that is trying to resurrect itself decades after its creation. The idea and principle of the films are actually quite simple and easy to change hence all the spinoffs with the Alien series. This time around the film tries to return to its roots and that is the idea of these alien creatures’ actually hunting and killing humans once more only this time on their own world. And for the most part they pull it off and the film is quite enjoyable in that action friendly blockbuster kind of way.
The story is simple a group of different militia and mercenary types thrown onto a strangle world where they are now the prey instead of the hunters. The key to the film is all about execution as the plot is so very straight forward unlike the original where we did not know the origin of the attacker. And they execute all these elements perfectly as we get to know each character as the film moves from action sequence to action sequence. The characters become the story as the action throws them together and keeps you glued to your seat.
Predators is all about two things the first being the action and the second being the characters. It is your typical horror\disaster setup and the most important thing is if they highlight the characters well enough to draw you in before they kill off the characters. And Predators does that very well you actually do care for the characters and are rooting for them to either make it or get killed and that is the key to the whole movie.
Adrien Brody is an interesting actor choice for a lead role in an action film like this and surprisingly he does a very good job. Unlike Arnold’s original portrayal as the buff action hero Brody is more the modern day thinking man’s action hero. He analyzes the problems of the film with is brain rather than his brawn. Topher Grace also puts in a good performance as the films surprise and adds another element to all the different characters of the film. Predators is exactly what you would want it to be a highly entertaining action film with plenty of interesting characters to keep you enthralled.
