Beck is a bounty hunter that is very good at his job that he hates. While there is few out there as good at retrieving anyone and anything for a certain price, Beck wants out. Beck wants to retire from the life of the bounty and open his own restaurant with himself as the chef and enjoy the quiet life. There is only one problem and that is his boss who does not want to lose Beck but makes a deal with them that if he retrieves one more bounty he will let him go his way. The bounty is his son Travis who has angered the wrong people and now has a price on his head. Beck is to travel into the heart of Brazil in a territory controlled by an evil overlord and bring back the wayward son to L.A. But this proves easier said than done as Travis does not wish to go as he is on the edge of discovering a mystical treasure and is bound to do everything he can to disrupt Beck. When the local overlord gets involved wanting the treasure Travis is searching for Beck will find himself on a perilous journey through the jungles trying to bring down his hardest rundown yet as every single force seems to be pitted against stopping him from fulfilling his contract and getting his restaurant.
Bravado. That’s what makes this movie; in the Rock’s previous performance I did not like him or the movie, as the movie didn’t have that one key element a part that the Rock who is a mediocre actor could pull of with bravado. The part of Beck could not be more perfect for him as he is able to deliver dry and somewhat cheesy lines with such style you end up cheering for him and the lines fit his character so well. Only the Rock could give someone two options and totally believe that they will choose the quick and easy path then seem disappointed when he has to do it the hard way. I think the Rock found the key for any mediocre actor to look great and make an enjoyable and highly entertain film. First pick a character that fits you to a tee and then play that character with bravado. Secondly fell the movie with a stellar cast that will make up for your shortcomings. And last but not least don’t take yourself too serious and have fun with the movie. This is not the first time a less that great actor has made a great movie (Arnold in several movies when he could barely speak English, and Sly in many movies as well to name two) its all about the delivery, the charm and the plot of the movie not just the actors. Really great actors should take notes, great acting does not make a film only enhances it. I loved the movie for what it was an enjoyable, action packed, somewhat silly adventure full of comedy. The movie is somewhat formulaic but still one of those great popcorn flicks that you just have love.
