While investigating the bloody aftermath of a grizzly murder, Detective Eric Mason has the feeling that it is the work of Jigsaw, the notorious killer who disappeared leaving a trail of bodies - and parts - behind. And Mason is right. Jigsaw is at work again. But instead of two people locked in a room with only one unthinkable way out, there are eight. Eight strangers -- unaware of their connection to each other -- forced to play out a game that challenges their wits and puts their lives in jeopardy.
I wouldn't say I hated the first movie but very highly dissapointed fits how I felt about it perfectly. Which is odd because for the most part I enjoyed the sequel and while it was no masterpiece in the horror genre I can finally understand where many of the crazed fans of this movie are coming from. The irony of it is that for the most part this movie is getting weaker reviews and many of its audiences are liking it less than the original where I am the exact opposite and liked it more. The problems I had with the first one didn’t bother me as much this time. The acting was still bad but there wasn’t one particular performance like Cary Elwes that just got under my skin and drove me nuts. And since most of the story is the same exact thing as the original, think of the Freddy or Jason movies they are pretty much the same thing every time, the movie was more like a remake of the movie from just last year just done where I actually like it this time. The other satisfying thing for me was the ending, the ending was horrible on the first one, I felt I got more closure with the ending this time even though they left it up for another sequel. I get the feeling this is the new horror series now that most of the interest for the Freddy and Jason movies have waned. The movies are bloody, gory, and vicious which I think fits with what the younger crowd likes as these are the teenage movie of choice for sure. Me personally I will be always more partial to the thrillers by Hitchcock or even slasher movies from the Halloween series, I don’t always need to see the bloodbath but that’s what today’s audiences want. Its your typical blood on the walls kind of movie and it wasn’t too bad for its genre.
Like I said before for the most part the acting across the board was pretty bad. But it was a bad ensemble job this time rather than the one of the single worst performance I have ever seen given by Cary Elwes. Oddly, even Donnie Wahlberg did a better job who is not known for his acting ability. Franky G is the one who stood out for me as though he was so over the top. You can see him as the crazed ex-criminal that would go postal on the other members of the house. He adds the tension the movie needed and ultimately he makes the movie. The story is there, it’s the same as the last one a serial killer likes to play with his victims to give them a better appreciation of life. All that’s different is the games they must play so it is good to have someone who could add an extra dynamic to the story even if it was by way over acting. Tobin Bell this time around was mostly noexitent as his role wasn’t that crucial which was a shame as he was the standout in the first film. The movie is exactly what you expect it to be and pulls no punches at being so, that being said if you like the first one you’ll probably like the sequel as well.
