Everyday is just like the next for Shaun, go to work, come home watch a little TV, and eventually end up at the local pub to get drunk and start all over the next day. You could say Shaun's life is stuck in a rut. He's a twenty nine year old who lives with his two best friends Ed and Pete, although of late their friendship has been strained by the routine of their lives that never changes. Shaun's girlfriend Liz is sick of the same old, boring nights down their local pub. So when Shaun breaks his promise to organize a special anniversary meal for them both, Liz decides to break it off with him. Drowning his sorrows the following day, Shaun devises a plan to win Liz back, but today, all is not as it seems... Unfortunately for Shaun 'the dead' have risen in London and soon a full Zombie apocalypse has exploded onto the streets. Determined to save his girlfriend and salvage their relationship, Shaun and Ed grab whatever is at hand (cricket bat, shovel, LP) to repel the attacking zombies, summoning reserves of strength they didn't know they possessed and straining muscles they forgot they had. Shaun and his pals let nothing stand in their way as they go forth on a zombie killing spree to save the day!
What a shame this movie had to play the limited/independent release game, as everyone should be go see it, and no one should be excluded from seeing probably one of the funniest comedies in the last five years. Yes, I know that the movie does have its horror and suspenseful moments but they are just the backdrop to the hilarity that is happening on screen. The movie just has about it a wit and humor that is biting and satirical. I found my sides hurting at times I was laughing so hard, and there is no greater praise than that for any movie. The movie almost seems to have a message at times but then realizes what it is and makes fun of itself for almost trying to be preachy. When will studio’s learn that most audiences crave smart, intelligently written movies rather than the crap that Hollywood constantly pushes out, that could be called fluff at best and has earned the moniker of “popcorn flick.” Not that there is anything wrong with popcorn flicks but sometimes you just crave some diversity and some well written, smart movies like Shaun of the Dead.
Simon Pegg and Nick Frost just absolutely steal the show as they have a kind of feed of each other energy that results in them just going back and forth like a great debate. Some of the scenes, like the one with the wicker bat and shovel, just have so much subtle humor in them fed on by the great acting they are doing on screen. Its almost hard to believe that this is both their first movie roles as they seem just so perfect on screen. The movie does fall into several moments of cliché but it always seems to bounce back with something clever and funny. This is a movie you must see, as it is easily the best comedy of the year.
