Picking up exactly where the first movie left off, Shrek and Fiona have fallen in love and decided to get married. After celebrating a whirlwind honeymoon they have returned home to Shrek’s swamp to make their lives together. But once they get there they find their old pal Donkey is not the only one waiting for them as an emissary from Fiona’s parents have come to invite her and her new husband home to the kingdom of Far, Far Away so they can meet the new hubby. But there is only problem Fiona’s parents were under the assumption that she had married Prince Charming, who had been the knight whom they thought, would be the one to rescue her from the dragon. So as Shrek and Fiona return to her homeland to tell her parents the good news they find not everyone is happy that she married to an ogre, with the most irate in this group being Prince Charming and even her parents aren’t supportive. But the happy new couples problems are about to become worse as the mysterious Fairy Godmother is Charming’s mother and she had plans for the kingdom. So after exerting some pressure on the king, Fiona’s father he hires the great ogre-slayer, Puss-in-Boots to take out Shrek and end the marriage that everyone but Shrek and Fiona would like seen done away with. So now it’s up to Shrek to make things right and somehow bring everyone around to him as Fiona’s husband while not getting killed.
Not to take away anything from this movie but I just didn’t find it as funny or as genius as I found the original. When the first Shrek came out the wit and humor was biting and unique. This movie tries to bank on the first one’s success a little too much. That is not to say it isn’t funny, it is quite hilarious at time and I am sure will leave none of its fans disappointed. But for me I will always have a soft spot in my heart for the first movie, which managed to lampoon Disney so well. This movie just enjoys weaving more fairy tales and inside jokes around its already familiar characters and forgets at times to take enough potshots at Disney. It should be clear by that statement alone that I am no fan of Disney and liked to see them taken down a notch at every opportunity. The movie is funny though almost beginning to end as part of the reason it is so good, is that they just have so much fun with the story and characters. There is so few movies that can reach audiences of all ages that it is always refreshing to see a movie remember that not only kids can enjoy a good animated movie. I may have sounded harsh at times, but if you get a chance go see this movie for sure as it will be easily one of the better comedies and animated movies of the year.
