In the eagerly-awaited film based on the hit television series, Homer must save the world from a catastrophe he himself created. It all begins with Homer, his new pet pig, and a leaky silo full of droppings - a combination that triggers a disaster the likes of which Springfield has never experienced. As Marge is outraged by Homer's monumental blunder, a vengeful mob descends on the Simpson household. The family makes a narrow escape, but is soon divided by both location and conflict. As the fates of Springfield and the world hang in the balance, Homer embarks on a personal odyssey of redemption - seeking forgiveness from Marge, the reunion of his splintered family, and the salvation of his hometown.
There was a time when the Simpson’s ruled the world of pop culture. Where the merchandise was nearly unavoidable and their catch phrases like “eat my shorts” and “cowbangu” were everywhere. That time was nearly a decade ago when the series was young and before upstarts like South Park and Family Guy had even made an appearance. So making a movie now after eighteen years kind of conjures up a weird demographic for the movie. There are two types of people that will see this movie the diehard fan that has followed the series loyally for nearly two decades and the casual viewer who is aware of the Simpson’s but who could not tell you who Ned’s wife was or recognize half of the 200 characters that will pop up in this movie excluding Ned’s wife who died on the shows years ago. So the creators of the Simpson’s Movie are faced with a daunting task of pleasing two different types of viewers and I believe that they did so. There is plenty of site gags for even the most die hard of fans and the movie is funny and entertaining for the casual viewer which is all you can ask for.
Me personally I probably fall somewhere in between, I used to watch the show much more religiously but its been several years since I have followed the adventures of the Simpson’s clan on TV as now I find myself sticking with the DVDs that are only now reaching season 10 of the epic show. But the fact that Homer and company have been on air for nearly two decades does not make them any less funny, the creators still found away to tickle your funny bone and find something new to laugh at whether it be spider pig or the mysteries of Alaska. The idea for the movie is fairly simple Homer the ultimate screw up manages to screw up one more time and again on an epic scale that threatens the very life os Springfield and now must either flee or face what he has done. By staying true to the characters and not trying for anything too grandiose they pull it off. I mean after eighteen years there might have been a temptation do something grander but that would most likely not have worked.
The important part Is the movie is funny, it will have you holding your sides as you laugh because they do manage to cram a lot of jokes in the ninety minutes they throw up on the screen. And while the screen time is a little short for a lot of movies its perfect for an animated movie and for a Simpson’s movie that is four times longer than their normal time frame. It allows them to throw in all your favorite characters without deluding the film as one fan parade of eighteen years and untold number of plot lines and characters. Sure there is a few MIA’s like our favorite aliens but for the most part they got to showcase off all their hilarious characters without wearing out their welcome. I wouldn’t go as far as to say “best movie ever” but that doesn’t make the movie any less funny or enjoyable. It’s been a long time in coming and the Simpson’s movie did not let down and will be the perfect addition to any Simpson’s fans collection.
