Close your eyes. Open your mind. You will be unprepared. A young girl's dream world provides the ultimate escape from her darker reality. Unrestrained by the boundaries of time and place, she is free to go where her mind takes her, and her incredible adventures blur the lines between what's real and what is imaginary. She has been locked away against her will, but Babydoll has not lost her will to survive. Determined to fight for her freedom, she urges four other young girls--the outspoken Rocket, the street-smart Blondie, the fiercely loyal Amber and the reluctant Sweet Pea - to band together and try to escape their terrible fate at the hands of their captors, Blue, Madam Gorski and the High Roller. Led by Babydoll, the girls engage in fantastical warfare against everything from samurais to serpents, with a virtual arsenal at their disposal. Together, they must decide what they are willing to sacrifice in order to stay alive. But with the help of a Wise Man, their unbelievable journey - if they succeed - will set them free.

Sucker Punch is a gratuitous, fanboy geeky kind of film and there is nothing wrong with that. If you appreciate all those things and like a movie that has fun, is somewhat geeky, know it’s all of these and just runs with it Sucker Punch is a film that you will love. It makes no aspirations about being anything other than it is a fun , entertaining film that throws all the rules out and just mixes a real life story with a fantastical fantasy like world that only leaves you hints of what is happening in the real world. It makes for a fun and entertaining film that totally immerses you into its world and leaves you wanting more.

The beauty of the film taking place in a fantasy world is that they can throw out the rulebook and do whatever they want and weave it back into the story. From scenes of fighting dragons and huge beasts to more gritty World War II like battle scenes against Nazi’s the film has a little of everything. The fantasy worlds are a thing of sheer beauty and imagination too. They can be gritty and dark and sinister or they can be beautiful and cinematic as the films flips back and forth as they tell each tale of trying to gain items to gain their freedom. And throughout it all it is woven with a geeky love of all things sci-fi and fantasy that just captures you and your imagination.

The best part might be though how it seems to weave three worlds in an almost insane and seamless manner. You have the real world of the insane asylum that you see very little at but the movie hints and constantly. You have the mind Babydoll in a dance studio with her fellow performers and lastly you have the fantasy world of her dances as she dwells in almost a dream like state to accomplish her goals. And all this is pulled together so beautifully it is like a tapestry of layers that hint and the other layers and leaving you wanting more. It is a masterpiece of film making that makes you want to see the movie again and again to try and unravel each dimension of the film.

Almost all the actors in the film are lesser known actors with the biggest name probably being Vanessa Hudgens and even she is more of side character than a main role. It helps with the realm of disability which the film relies on a lot as you kind of abandon all logic and fall down the rabbits hole to be entertained and amazed. You can’t place the actress and it makes it that much easier to suspend disbelief. Emily Browning does do a fantastic job as Babydoll though as she has to inhabit all three worlds where the other actresses only inhabit two of the three world. Sucker Punch is a geek and fanboy dream and doesn’t mind that it is gratuitous and mindless entertainment which just adds to the fun.
