Belle Williams has always dreamed of one thing and that is to be a NASCAR driver and that has led her to be a speed demon in whatever she does whether it is delivering pizza’s on a bicycle or driving a Taxi around the streets of New York. Flying through the streets of New York in her tricked-out taxi, she has earned a rep as New York's fastest cabbie. But her dreams are about to be derailed by overeager cop Andy Washburn, whose undercover skills are matched only by his total ineptitude behind the wheel. Washburn, whose lack of vehicular skills has landed him in the precinct doghouse, is hot on the heels of a gang of beautiful Brazilian bank robbers, led by Vanessa, their cold, calculating and sexy leader. So in a brash move he hopes into Belle’s cab and instructs her to take him to the robbery and drivers license-less Washburn convinces Belle to team up with him to pursue Vanessa and crew. He gives Belle carte blanche to drive at any speed and break any law. The car-less cop and speed-demon cabbie, New York's unlikeliest partners begin a high-speed game of cat and mouse with the robbers. That is, if Belle and Washburn don't end up killing each other first and if Washburn can manage to keep his job before he gets fired for his absolute ineptitude.
From my understanding this movie is based on a French film and after seeing its remake it really wants to make me go out and see if I can find the original. Why, because the movie is absolutely hilarious and I truly doubt the original was so comedic and from what I understand it was more of action packed film. That is not to say that the movie isn’t action packed but it seems they were just more interested in being a comedy. Which is perfect though for the stars they cast in the film as Queen Latifah has proven that she can be very funny and she just seems to shine on the big screen. For me it was Jimmy Fallon that just didn’t seem to fit, as he really didn’t develop any chemistry with Latifah or come off as a cop that is suppose to very good at his job but very bad at driving. Although the scene where Latifah helps him with his driving problems based to music was a riot.
As far as the action goes, it was almost like a been there and done that kind of movie. Sure you had some really fun and exciting scenes of car chases and high speed pursuits but there have been many movies that have done it better and with more style, Bourne Identity for example has a much better chase sequence that makes anything in Taxi look almost amateurish. The whole tripped out Taxi just seemed to fail for me as a comedic foil simply because it wasn’t done right and they give away too much about it in the trailers. But for the most part the movie was funny and worth seeing just for a good laugh.
