Jessica Shepard seems to have everything going perfect in her life for the first time. She has just been promoted to a Homicide Detective and while this may seem grand to her everything begins to become far from perfect as her life starts to unravel. It all starts when she kicks a suspect in the face that she had tracked down and who tried to make her his latest rape victim. Not remorse at all for actions she is still required to see the Department shrink because of the possible traumatic experience. That’s when everything seems to go wrong as the Doctor dredges up bad memories of her childhood that she would as soon forget, like the fact that her father a respected police officer would end up becoming a serial killer who would finally take his and Jessica’s mothers life in one last brutal act of violence. But that is when also things become twisted in her work as starts her first Homicide case to only find out the victim is someone she had made love with in a string of one night stands that have become her life. This seems odd until a second murder takes place also with someone she had slept with in her wild drunken flings. Now, she suspects someone might be watching her and killing anyone she has contact with. But, she also seems to be losing her mind as she slips into the madness of her past and she is not sure if in her drunken stupors if she might be committing the murders herself. With the help of the her father’s old partner and the man that raised he Jessica must unravel the mess that has fast become her life before it is too late.

This is the type of movie that is very slow in the beginning but builds up steam as it goes along, almost like a runway freight train as it takes one unsuspected turn after another in a wild ride that will always keep you wondering what is going to happen next. That is what I liked so much about the movie it always managed to keep you guessing in a movie that turns into murder mystery in the good ole fashion style of who dun it. You may guess you know, but most likely after the movie takes its hundredth twisted turn you have no clue anymore. The movie does seem to wrap up too nice and neat, as I almost would have liked it to be left in a mess that they never sort out. Ashley Judd is really good in these types of roles as she can play the strong female lead that finds herself at an emotional loss as one tragedy after another befalls her. She did it in Double Jeopardy and she does it even better here, I doubt they could have found a more perfect lead for this part. While Samuel L Jackson and Andy Garcia also put into some memorable parts as the movie leads you to somewhere you would never expect it to go. The movie is a good ole fashioned thriller that keeps you guessing, keeps you enthralled and ultimately thrills you as it takes one twisted turn after another.
