Set in the late 21st century, a subculture of humans has emerged with a genetic mutation causing enhanced speed, incredible stamina and acute intelligence. As more people are infected and the government becomes increasingly terrified of their growing power, those with the mutation are treated as outcasts, subjected to terrifying tests and put into quarantine. The government sets out to destroy them, but one woman is determined that that doesn't happen: ultra-beautiful, ultra-lethal Violet. With eye-popping martial arts skills and chameleon-like abilities, Violet becomes a rogue warrior bent on protecting her new race -- and seeking revenge on those who created it.
There are certain kinds of movies that you know you shouldn’t like because they are just mindless, inane action films with very little plot, sub par acting and numerous clichés but you can’t help but love them for all these reasons you shouldn’t even like them. Some movies fail to pull off the inane action movie, the popcorn flick like Aeon Flux while others like the Matrix and Ultraviolet do it with ease. This is no Matrix for sure with it’s story that was so insanely cool but many of the action sequences reminded me of the Matrix. It was like if they hadn’t used the stop and bullet-time scenes in the Matrix and rather tried to show how fast and how deadly the characters were you would have got what you get with Ultraviolet. No bullet-time but you believe that Milla Jovovich is super human fast and that she can is able to kill with such ease. That’s the idea of the movie, how many really cool action sequences and battle scenes can we cram into ninety minutes and leave the audience going ok that was pretty cool.
The movie does try and pass of a story and a plot but we have already seen this story and plot and I thought Aeon Flux did it better all the while failing on the action side if the movie. These kinds of stories and plots are almost too easy we can throw it in the future then we can do whatever we want to do and write it off as a science fiction if anyone dares question what we are doing. I like how all these movies do have an almost anti-government feel to them, and anti-establishment bitterness that reflects how some or maybe many may feel about our own government that every day becomes more and more big brother as it claims it is trying to protect us from ourselves. That is why the story is believable because we can see it in our own society that when a gap opens for government to take control, they do, lock stock and barrel. Look at the patriot acts who use the events of 9/11 as an excuse to seize as much power as possible, in the movie it is a virus a disease that allows them to gain control, the only difference between the movie and now is we have yet to see the consequences of our own government taking too much power. If you can base a movie in reality especially one so action minded as this movie it allows for the plot to be a little weak and the action to fill in the gaps and it makes for a very good movie.
Milla Jovovich definitely has the bad ass, kick ass girl part down that’s for sure. We saw Charlize Theron try and flub her way through it but Milla we know can do it and have seen her do it time and time again. She has that pissed off female power that you know would kick your butt if you crossed her and she uses it time and time again in her movies. I am not sure if she could branch out from it but it seems to be working for her and her movies if nothing else are very enjoyable and fun to watch. I have one thing to say and that’s Cameron Bright is a very creepy little kid and any movie he is in gives you goose bumps from just looking at him. I liked how they used him in the movie and he was a good fit with Milla. I wasn’t into Nick Chinlund as the uber-villain he just felt to much like a cliché to me and every time he was on screen the movie seemed to let up a little. The best parts are the action parts and having him as the end boss in gaming terms just didn’t work. The movie is super stylish, and in the end very fun and enjoyable in a shallow kind of way.
