David Aames appears to have it all money, the lifestyle of the rich and famous, all the women he could ever want, it seems as if he truly does lead a charmed life. Handsome, wealthy and charismatic, the young New York City publishing executive's freewheeling existence is enchanting, yet he seems to be missing something. He inherited all his possessions and his empire when his parents were killed in a car crash leaving somewhat of void in his life. Then, one night David meets Sofia, the girl of his dreams, and what appeared to be missing from his nearly perfect life but when he makes a small mistake it appears he has lost her. But that is not about to become the worst of his worries as David has a sex buddy named Julia that is about to change his life as she becomes immensely jealous of David wanting to be with Sofia. She has decided to take matters into her own hands as she feels that David made promises to her with his actions that he is not keeping and to repay him for his infidelity she drives him and his car off a cliff. Now David finds himself while alive scarred from the accident and his once handsome face is a misery to look upon. But as David tries to get his life back together and attain the girl of his dreams he will visit a clinic that will hopefully return to him his good looks and his once charmed life.

What a psychedelic trip of a movie as it leads on a ride of one weird and surreal story line after another. You find yourself leaving the theatre almost wondering what happened and craving to see the movie one more time to pick up on all the things that you missed the first time you saw it. The movie has that surprise and twist ending that just leaves you stunned and sitting there after the movie is over going wow. The movie also seems to have a moral as it tries to show David must pay for the once exuberant lifestyle that he once led with no regards to the feelings of those he might hurt along the way. While Tom Cruise is not one of my more favorite actors he does a superb job in this movie as he plays not only his usually pretty boy role but also the role of a scarred and destroyed man that was the cause of his own destruction. The role is a hundred times more deep and well done that any role Cruise has done in the past and might be a turning point for him with more meaningful and better acting roles in the future. Cameron Diaz though somewhat steals the show though not only with he blunt appraisals of her and David’s relationship but as the catalyst that throws his life all into turmoil. This is also refreshing to see from her, rather than her usually bubbly empty-headed performances and roles she usually plays. If you are looking for a movie that feels like you have taken acid and are on some type of psychedelic trip but that also has a moral and makes you think deeply this is the movie for you as it is a must see.
