25-year-old Wes was the most disaffected, cube-dwelling drone the planet had ever known. His boss chewed him out hourly, his girlfriend ignored him routinely and his life plodded on interminably. Everyone was certain this disengaged slacker would amount to nothing. There was little else for Wes to do but wile away the days and die in his slow, clock-punching rut. Until he met a woman named Fox. After his estranged father is murdered, the deadly sexy Fox recruits him into the Fraternity, a secret society that trains Wes to avenge his father's death by unlocking his dormant powers. As she teaches him how to develop lightning-quick reflexes and phenomenal agility, Wes discovers this team lives by an ancient, unbreakable code: carry out the death orders given by fate itself. With wickedly brilliant tutor - including the fraternity's enigmatic leader, Sloan - Wes grows to enjoy all the strength he ever wanted. But slowly, he begins to realize there is more to his dangerous associates than meets the eye. And as he wavers between newfound heroism and vengeance, Wes will come to learn what no one can ever teach him: he alone controls his destiny.
Sometimes you have to just shut off your brain, set all your skepticism aside, ignore all physics and the laws of the universe and just sit down and enjoy a movie that defies all logic. Wanted is what the popcorn genre was created for, it is a pure adrenaline, ridiculous, entertaining ride that ignores all the things that could ruin other movies like having to stick to reality at times. The movie is about a super group of assassins that have been around for a thousand years, who can curve bullets defying the very laws of physics and who are trying to recruit your every day average joe (you or me) into their organization. It’s the average guy getting to play neo, learn Kung Fu, shoot at people, dodge trains and live an entirely impossible life free of the normal worries and problems of life. They take the average nobody and give him a shot at rock fame, movie stardom and role it into a secret life of killing and doing good. I mean what more can you want from a movie that makes no pretense at being your brain dead action film that is non stop entertainment and fun.
So its ironic that one of the things I disliked about the movie is just them playing the same we don’t have to play by your rules kind of game. I thought there were moments that were so incredible, so impossible and so far fetched that they detracted from the movie, whether it be someone leaping from building to building Superman like or where the orders come for their next victims some moments just seemed too outlandish for me. But that’s the irony of it all, the entire movie is outlandish, crazy ridiculous for me to line one outlandish moment but then be distracted by another is sheer insanity. It doesn’t mean I didn’t love the movie because I did but it still seems out that I can like some of the crazier moments but at other times feel like they went too far.
Wanted is what other movies have tried to be since the Matrix came out nine years ago, a movie that just blows you away but at the same time doesn’t have to play by the rules other movies must play by. They can curve bullets, pull off impossible feats and stunts and do it with a wink and a grin like you and I just walking and chewing gum at the same time. That’s what made the Matrix so good is them not having to follow those rules or physics but being able to weave a fantastic tale that is independent of these kind of things. Wanted does that, it is far fetched almost science fiction but still so much damn fun.
Angelina Jolie is perfect for this role, some of the bad girl craziness has gone the way of motherhood the last few years but she still can play the bad ass hardened gun toting chick like nobody else. I am not that big of a fan of James McAvoy but he still pulls off the dorky kitche character very well. He doesn’t try and play it with the cool of Neo but as your every day average Joe trying to find his feet in a surreal world. The movie is entertaining and just lots of gun toting, blowing up crap kind of fun that makes the summer feel like summer.
