Eagle Monroe is the most popular president in recent American History as his approval rates soared in the 80 percent. But after completing his two terms in the White House he decides to settle down in a small coastal New England town of Mooseport to write his memoirs and enjoy his retirement. But there is also a double reason for him doing this as his wife got their Baltimore house in the divorce and he has no where else to go. After arriving he's soon asked to run for the office of mayor of the town as their mayor has recently passed away and the deadline for the application is drawing near. However, the local hardware store owner Handy also dropped his hat into the ring as he was thinking he would be running unopposed. So when the President asks him to drop out because of all the bad PR of David vs. Goliath he has no problem doing so until the president hits on his girlfriend and asks her out on a date. Now, he wants to run against him in a campaign of "just to keep things honest". The president's life-long experience of political campaigns leads him, however, to accelerate the competitive nature of the race, to the point that it becomes one of the most contentious fights of his career. All the while Handy who didn’t really want to run in the first place finds himself in real contention of beating the most popular president in American history all the while trying to sort out the relationship with his girlfriend whom he and the president also seem to competing for.
I have a feeling that a lot of people might find this movie extremely funny and feel it was truly great. I on the other hand was somewhat bored throughout it as the movie does have very funny and humorous moments but they all seemed to be separated by large pauses in both the action as well as the humor. This made the movie very slow for me and it never really seemed to be going anywhere. Another problem of the movie is the trailer, the movie has a very simple plot and the trailer revealed the entire plot for you making the movie just an extended version of the trailer and that seems very redundant to me. They should have tried to spice things up a little, thrown and occasional twist here and there but they didn’t as they seemed pleased to play out a movie that you knew everything about coming into to. This is not to say the movie wasn’t funny because it could be when they decided to be but that wasn’t nearly enough to make up for the non existent plot. It was like a TV sitcom exploded on the screen in the form of a movie and I am not much of a fan of sitcoms which is why I thing some people might really like this movie as they have been programmed by their idiot box to not expect more plot. I am also not a fan of TV actors trying to make movies as they don’t seem to have the knack for it and are usually really bad. Ray Romano seemed like he was a meth addict to me at times as he just didn’t have any screen presence at all and just stuttered his way through the movie. If he acts the same way on the small screen it makes me grateful I watch so little TV.
