A man signs up for a self-help program based on one simple principle: say yes to everything... and anything. At first, unleashing the power of "yes" transforms his life in amazing and unexpected ways, but he soon discovers that opening up his life to endless possibilities can have its drawbacks.

Ahh the wonders of Jim Carrey even when it appears like he is not really trying that hard he still manages to turn out a half decent movie. That is what can be said about Yes Man it is a half decent movie, it will make you laugh many times but also leave you a little bored at other times. The performances aren't that great as many of the actors just seemed to be sleep walking through the movie including Jim Carrey. The screenplay isn't that great as they took a pretty good idea and just never fully explored it rather seeming to be happy just hammering one gag after another. And the ending could be call hammy at best. But the movie does make you laugh, it will make you smile but it will also be forgotten in a very short time as the likes of Carrey and Adam Sandler push out their next half decent comedy.

I think Jim Carrey might be better suited for the dramas he was finally starting to break into. I mean fare like Cable Guy bombed as well as the more recent Number 23 but he has turned out quite a few great dramatic performances in films like Eternal Sunshine on the Spotless Mind and the Truman Show. I mean the comedic and rubber faced modern day like Marx brother routine is what allowed him to work in Hollywood and was fine ten or fifteen years ago but he has shown that he so much more to offer that it seems like such a waste when he sleep walks through a movie like Yes Man. What made him great ten years ago seemed to be this manic energy that he had as he was trying to make it big but gone now is that energy and his movies just aren't the same now nor as funny.

The ironic thing about Yes Man is the movie could have probably been made into a pretty good drama though. The story of a man down on his luck and someone who says no to everything including living his life and then finds self help in saying yes to everything could be a very dramatic transformation. I mean it would be an interesting way to do the movie and would have required a lot more effort by everyone involved. And thats what the movie needed a lot more effort from everyone involved.

I like Zooey Deschanel as she is cute and always fun in movies. But that seems to be her mantra and her pigeon hold as she always plays the same cute kind of character. She has also always seems to have this slightly sarcastic and wiry kind of attitude in every movie she is in as well. One of the problems of the movie is Zooey and Carrey never really seem to build any chemistry in the movie and they don't really seem like a couple that often not until near the end when they head to Lincoln Nebraska on whim. That is where the movie kind of takes off but sadly the movie is almost over and all that is left is the hammy ending. Yes Man is a decent movie that will make you laugh but also really doesn't try that hard either.
