A top Israeli commando named Zohan (Adam Sandler) fakes his own death in order to pursue his dream: becoming a hairstylist in New York. Though he wants to put his life of counter-terrorism behind him, he quickly finds that it is not so easy to escape one's roots. As enemies old and new try to take him out, they will all come to learn the same thing: you don't mess with the Zohan.

I could come up with about a dozen puns on the title for this lackluster film like You Don't Mess with nearly two hours of time but I won't because the movie doesn't deserve that much effort nor time. And that pretty much sums up the movie as it really doesn't bother to put much time nor effort into actually being a really good movie instead coming up with an idea that could have been funny and hammering it into the ground. The movie did have potential and is the reason I went to see it because it looked like it could be genuinely funny but the problem is that a funny idea for a movie does not translate into a funny movie if those creating it don't even really try beyond coming up with that funny idea.

The film would come up with an idea that was supposed to be funny and then they would do the same scene over and over and over and over and over (well you get the idea) until you wanted to claw your eyes out with boredom. The problem is that many of the ideas weren't that funny to begin with (the whole hair dresser sex scenes weren't that funny to begin with and after the eighth or ninth time they went to this particular well you almost want to walk out on the movie) and then to have to sit through them over and over again becomes almost like a sort of torture.

I am not saying the movie was entirely bad and unfunny because at times the movie could be humorous the problem is these moments were few and far between. The movie also slowly spirals into an afternoon special about tolerance and peace between the warring factions of the Muslim religion. The problem with that is the movie never really believes in what is trying to preach as they pretty much use every stereotype in the book about people from the Middle East and the Muslim faith. I can see any Muslim or middle easterner who sees this movie being highly offended by it, which makes a mockery of them trying to be preachy about the political situation in Israel.

Rather than try and break out of the pigeon hold Adam Sandler made for himself nearly a decade ago, as the man-child he seems to embrace it and it has grown very old and stale over the years. It doesn't work like it once did and just comes off as laziness on his part and him not wanting to expand as an actor. It also has become very tiresome of him strutting out all his friends in his movies many like Rob Schneider who couldn't act to save their lives. Its time to put away the Happy Madison persona and try something new like Jim Carrey has in recent years we already have a new class of funny men doing a much better job from the Apatow crew so time to retire the man child once and for all.
