Two men have found a way to survive a world overrun by zombies. Columbus is a big wuss -- but when you're afraid of being eaten by zombies, fear can keep you alive. Tallahassee is an AK-totin', zombie-slayin' badass whose single determination is to get the last Twinkie on earth. As they join forces with Wichita and Little Rock, who have also found unique ways to survive the zombie mayhem, they will have to determine which is worse: relying on each other or succumbing to the zombies.
Zombieland is a Clever and Brilliant film. I normally don’t like to use blurbs in that kind of fashion as I am not trying to write on the back of a DVD box to entice you to buy the film but this is the kind of film that deserves that kind of blurb. The film really isn’t breaking any new ground or isn’t doing anything that has been done before but what it does do is take the genre of the living dead and in a tongue in cheek way having tons of fun with it. The film will make you laugh, it will enthrall you with its face paced action and maybe in the end it will warm your heart as the good guy finally gets the girl and while there is no hope of living happily ever after they sure will try.
I am reminded quite a bit of Shaun of the Dead by Zombieland and not just because both stories revolve around the living dead but because of how they have fun with the story and make light of an apocalyptic ending of mankind. There is this almost madcap fun to the film and you can just see the filmmakers and cast had a blast making this movie and while the world may have ended the characters can at least go out in style or as the characters of the film would put it nut up or shut up.
Zombieland and Shaun of the Dead are films that I wish the spoof industry would take a page from. Instead of all these moronic films that aren’t funny and just rip their entire plots from whatever popular summer blockbuster was released the most recent Zombieland spoofs the horror genre but in a completely hilarious way. It makes no reference to any modern films made instead it just has fun with its story and delivers the laughs just like spoof movies used to when they spoofed genres not whatever film just hit the theatres. But then again Zombieland really isn’t a spoof movie although it has the elements of the genre. Zombieland is an action/comedy/horror film that is one of the most refreshing of the year.
I really like Woody Harrelson he just has this wonderful sarcastic sense of humor that is so perfect in movies and it’s a shame that we don’t get to see him that often in films. He also is quite a good actor, part bad ass, part comedian and part touching back story that just sells the film. Newcomer Jesse Eisenberg is also extremely refreshing he pulls of the nerd in a way that the likes of nerd actors Jonah Hill and Michael Cera would never be able to accomplish. He is so real and so believable as the lovable loser that it makes the other nerd roles in recent Hollywood seem so fake and forced. Zombieland is brilliant, clever, funny, madcap and just so very enjoyable.
